Abstract: Presented herein are methodologies for using legacy optical fiber for 10 Gigabit Ethernet or higher data rates. The methodology includes obtaining an electrical signal derived from optical-to-electrical conversion of an optical signal that was transmitted over, and received from, an optical fiber; and applying an equalization process to the electrical signal, wherein the equalization process is of a type that is designed to equalize received signals that were transmitted via a copper cable.

Abstract: A method is provided for assessing the quality of an optical transmitter and/or its interoperability with a receiver. The method includes obtaining an optical signal output by an optical transmitter and performing coherent optical-to-electrical detection of the optical signal to produce an in-phase receive signal and a quadrature receive signal. The method further includes a computing device emulating a worst-case configuration of an optical fiber with which the optical transmitter is to be used, based on the in-phase receive signal and the quadrature receive signal to produce a noise contribution associated with the worst-case characteristics of the optical fiber and determining a figure of merit of the optical transmitter based on the noise contribution.

Abstract: In one embodiment an apparatus, method, and system is described, the embodiment an apparatus, method including receiving a stream of data frames at an input interface, the data frames one of including security frames, or being included in security frames, wherein the security frames include payload data, performing forward error correction on the data frames a forward error correction (FEC) decoder, buffering received data frames at a buffer and blanker engine and building a complete security frame of the received data frames, determining whether or not to suppress taking a consequent action based on a frequency of authentication errors at an authentication engine, wherein the consequent action to be taken or suppressed, when taken, is taken upon payload data of one or more security frames including a data frame upon which an authentication error occurred. Related apparatus, methods and systems are also described.

Abstract: Techniques are provided for generating a physical test pattern that is framed within an Forward Error Correction (FEC)-encoded stream or sequence. Accordingly, in one embodiment, a method is provided that includes obtaining a physical layer test pattern for testing operation of a device; generating an FEC framed test pattern that embeds the physical layer test pattern into an FEC-encoded stream; and applying the FEC framed test pattern to the transceiver device to test physical layer operation of the device and to obtain FEC error statistics.
