    Abstract: A communication system is provided. The communication system includes at least one radio point, each configured to exchange radio frequency (RF) signals with a user equipment (UE) at a site. The communication system also includes a controller communicatively coupled to the at least one radio point. The controller is configured to determine a transmit power control (TPC) command for the UE based on a signal to interference plus noise (SINK) for the UE. The controller is also configured to determine a count (N) of consecutive uplink transmissions, from the UE, meeting at least one criteria. The controller is also configured to determine a modified TPC command for the UE based on the count (N) and the TPC command.

    Abstract: One embodiment is directed to a method of estimating a transmit power of a UE. The method comprises determining, at a base station serving the UE, a received power for the UE, determining, at the base station, a path loss for the UE, and determining, at the base station, the transmit power for the UE as a function of the received power for the UE and the path loss for the UE. The method can be used when the first UE has reached or exceeded a maximum reported power headroom (PHR) for the UE and can be used for performing transmit power control for the UE as a function of the determined transmit power for the UE. Other embodiments are disclosed. The described embodiments can be used in a cloud radio access network (C-RAN) as well as other types of base stations.

    Abstract: One embodiment is directed to controlling a gain for a receive signal path for receiving wireless signals. The following are repeatedly performed: determining an estimate of the total noise and interference in a received signal and determining a gain value for the receive signal path based on the estimate of the total noise and interference in order to maintain the digital data at a digital set point for a signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) decoded with a highest modulation and coding scheme specified for the wireless channel. Another embodiment is directed to determining a received signal strength of the signals received at the receive signal path and determining a gain value for the receive signal path based on the received signal strength that maintains the digital data at a digital set point for a SINR sufficient to decode the MCS specified for the wireless channel.

    Abstract: A distributed radio access network (RAN) includes a plurality of radio points (RPs), each being configured to exchange radio frequency (RF) signals with at least one user equipment (UE). The distributed RAN also includes a baseband controller communicatively coupled to the plurality of RPs via a fronthaul network. The baseband controller is configured to determine, for each of the plurality of RPs, a number of successfully received packets on the fronthaul network, for a wireless channel, during a measurement interval. The baseband controller is also configured to determine, for each of the plurality of RPs, a number of packet losses (reflecting dropped and/or delayed packets), for the wireless channel and during the measurement interval, based on the number of successfully received packets.

    Abstract: A cloud radio access network (C-RAN) includes a baseband controller communicatively coupled to a plurality of radio points (RP) via a fronthaul network. Each of the plurality of RPs are configured to exchange radio frequency (RF) signals with at least one user equipment (UE). At least one of the RPs is configured to determine a timing difference while synchronizing to the baseband controller; and determine a frequency error, between the RP and a neighboring base station, based on a radio environment monitoring (REM) procedure. A phase error is determined, between the baseband controller and the neighboring base station, phase error is determined based on the timing difference for the RP and baseband controller, and the frequency error for the RP and the neighboring base station.
