Abstract: A lightweight always-on monitoring, collecting, diagnosing, and correcting utility operates in an enhanced storage manager that manages a data storage managements system. The always-on utility provides a comprehensive and pro-active approach, which is intended to reduce, if not altogether eliminate, the need for after-the-fact diagnostics. The always-on utility also enforces so-called best practices and other heuristics, which include pro-actively activating certain database settings that are not enabled by default; manipulating certain aspects of the database to improve performance; and reporting aspects that are outside best-practice parameters to the trouble report system so that system administrators and/or developers may intervene before a catastrophic failure occurs. In some cases, the best-practice parameters represent heuristics designed by the present inventors to improve the performance and general health of the management database.

Abstract: The exemplary system and methods provide a solution for reclaiming the space occupied by invalid blocks of data stored on secondary storage devices. The space reclamation techniques may employ a primary table, a deduplication chunk table, or an index data structure located with the secondary copy of data on secondary storage devices. One exemplary method uses information from the deduplication database media agent and a deduplication chunk table. Another exemplary method uses an index (e.g., single instance file index) that is associated with and stored with each chunk of data. Based on the information provided by the deduplication chunk table and the index, exemplary system and methods identify blocks of invalid data and copy over only valid data blocks to a new container file.

Abstract: An information management system uses cloud storage resources store secondary copies of primary data created by client computing devices managed by a storage manager. Deduplication operations are performed on the secondary copies, which results in chunk metadata indices that allow for tracking and faster retrieval of the deduplicated secondary copies. The chunk metadata indices may reference data segments of the deduplicated secondary copies. The data segments may be stored in, and across, one or more sub-files. As the secondary copies are aged out from the cloud storage resources, data segments are identified as being orphaned or non-orphaned. Data segments that are orphaned are pruned to remove their corresponding sub-files from the cloud storage resources, where the sub-files are replaced with new sub-files that do not contain the orphaned data segments.
