摘要: A fiber optic ribbon having a first subunit and a second subunit. The first and second subunits including a plurality of respective optical fibers being connected by respective primary matrices. The first and second subunits being generally aligned along a plane with a secondary matrix contacting portions of the first and second subunits. The secondary matrix having at least one end portion and at least one medial portion. The at least one medial portion and the at least one end portion of the secondary matrix are separated by a gap along at least a portion of the longitudinal axis, thereby defining a preferential tear portion. In other embodiments, the at least one medial portion is recessed relative to the at least one end portion.

摘要: An optical fiber ribbon having a plurality of optical fibers connected by a radiation curable matrix and a method of manufacturing the same are disclosed. The optical fiber ribbon includes at least one preferential tear portion formed by a weakened portion in the matrix, the weakened portion of the matrix having a reduced cure level compared with the surrounding matrix material, thereby creating the weakened portion. In another embodiment, the optical fiber ribbon is formed of two subunits each having a plurality of optical fibers, wherein the subunits are connected by a secondary matrix.

摘要: A fiber optic cable product is provided that includes a strength member and an elongate cable core surrounding and mechanically coupled to the strength member. The cable core defines a number of lengthwise extending slots for receiving optical fibers and a number of voids proximate the strength member that also typically extend lengthwise therethrough. The fiber optic cable product is therefore relatively lightweight and flexible. In order to insure that the mechanical properties of the fiber optic cable product are uniform, the cable core typically defines the voids in a generally symmetrical manner about the central strength member. A method and an apparatus for extruding a fiber optic cable product that includes a cable core defining a plurality of voids are also disclosed.

摘要: A fiber optic cable includes a messenger section having at least one strength member, a carrier section having at least one optical fiber therein, and a common jacket that forms a common jacket. In one embodiment, the carrier jacket has a preferential tear portion adjacent to the at least one optical fiber with a substantially continuous outer surface in the carrier jacket adjacent to the preferential tear portion. The preferential tear portion may be defined by at least one of: at least one internal void, at least one weld line, and at least one wing extending from a tape disposed about the one or more optical fibers. Various alternatives are possible. For example, the carrier jacket may also or alternatively include at least one gripping area extending for enhancing the gripping of the carrier section when pulling apart the carrier section and messenger section.
