The spindle 3 of a valve is formed at its lower end with a conical part 5 which is received in a conical recess 7 formed in a resilient closure member 6, a metal disc 9 being welded or vulcanized in the closure member and co-acting, in the closed position, with a shoulder 12 on the spindle to distribute the closing force over a large area. The disc also ensures that the force required to assemble the closure member on the disc is less than that required to remove it. The shoulder 12 provides a fulcrum about which the closure member may move to accommodate misalignment. In the open position the top surface 14 of the closure member coacts with surface 15 of the body to seal the passage 4 through which the spindle passes, thus allowing glands to be changed. The recess 7 may extend through the closure member and the surface of the spindle may be roughened to increase the friction holding the closure member in place.
