A raw material composition containing a hindered phenol compound having a specified structure and a compound constituting a liquid crystal material is prepared, the raw material composition is brought into contact with a purifying agent after being dissolved in an organic solvent or without the addition of an organic solvent to the raw material composition, and then the purifying agent is removed, and when a composition after the purifying agent is removed does not contain the organic solvent, the composition is provided as a target composition, and when the composition after the purifying agent is removed contains the organic solvent, the organic solvent is distilled off to provide a target composition.

The present invention provides a compound represented by general formula (1) as well as a liquid crystal composition containing this compound and a liquid crystal display using this liquid crystal composition. Using the compound represented by general formula (1) as a component of a liquid crystal composition makes it possible to obtain a liquid crystal composition having a low viscosity (η), a high Δn, suitable T-i, high miscibility with other liquid crystal compounds, and presenting a liquid crystal phase over a wide temperature range. This is therefore extremely useful as a structural component of a liquid crystal composition for a liquid crystal display requiring a high speed response.

An object of the invention is to provide a polymerizable compound having small refractive index anisotropy and having high storage stability and high alignment properties when constituting a polymerizable liquid crystal composition, and provide a polymerizable liquid crystal composition containing the polymerizable compound. Further, the object is to provide a polymer produced by polymerizing the polymerizable liquid crystal composition and an optically anisotropic body including the polymer. The present invention provides a polymerizable compound represented by general formula (I), a polymerizable liquid crystal composition containing the compound as a constituent component, and further provides a polymer produced by polymerizing the polymerizable liquid crystal composition and an optically anisotropic body including the polymer.

In sequential steps including preparing a solution of a compound having —CF2O— as a linking group, bringing the solution into contact with a purifying agent or not bringing the solution into contact with a purifying agent, subsequently performing crystallization from the obtained solution for crystallization to precipitate a crystal, collecting the crystal by filtration, and drying the crystal, steps from the initiation of the crystallization step to the end of the drying step are performed in an atmosphere having an oxygen concentration of 3% by volume or less.
