Retro-inverso peptides derived from leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) having between 18 and about 40 amino acids and including the sequence shown in SEQ ID NO: 1. These peptides have the same activity as native LIF and also have neurotrophic activity. Because of the D-amino acid linkage in the peptides, they are less susceptible to proteolytic degradation in vivo.

A microfilm drying device and method are presented for salvaging and drying microfilm which has become wet due to excessive moisture resulting from high water, floods and the like. The device includes a needle assembly which is slidably affixed within a frame to direct air into the internal compartments of a flexible jacket containing microfilm strips. In another embodiment, a hand held drying device allows air to pass through a series of needles to dry the interior of the flexible jackets.

A golf club having suppressed vibration modes is disclosed. The club comprises a shaft, a golf club head, a grip and a plurality of discrete shaft stiffeners. The shaft stiffeners are strategically located along the shaft so as to shift the nodes of at least the second and third flexural vibration modes of the club shaft such that a node of each of the second and third flexural vibration modes occurs both at the club face and within the region underlying the golf club grip. Preferably, the stiffeners are made of a shape memory alloy that can be shrunk onto the outside surface of the shaft, then expanded to permit the position of the stiffeners to be adjusted to suit the boundary conditions imposed by the human user.

A golf club head has a cavity for receiving a face insert. A first face insert, which is disposed in the cavity, has a front surface that is contoured. A second face insert composed of multiple rod elements is disposed in the cavity on top of the first face insert so that the rod elements are supported by the contoured front surface of the first face insert. Because the first face insert supporting the rod elements is contoured, the individual rod elements are of different lengths and, therefore, exhibit different dynamic responses when striking a golf ball, even when the rod elements are made of the same material.

A selectable insert for a golf club head (e.g., for a golf putter) is configured to produce a predetermined frequency response through the use of, for example, a damped single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) system. A set of such inserts are provided, and one or more inserts from that set is selected in accordance with the response of an individual, for example, an individual's subjective response to the sound of the insert and/or an individual's biomechanical response to the “feel” or discomfort produced by vibrations propagating through the golf club to the individual. In this way, a customized insert may be selected in accordance with, for example: whether and to what extent the individual finds the frequency response of the inset pleasing to the ear; the extent to which the insert produces unpleasant vibrations in the hands, wrists, arms, and other parts of the individual's body; whether the weighting of the club head is suitable; whether the club head is susceptible to unwanted twisting during impact; and/or whether the overall “feel” of the club is subjectively acceptable.

A golf club head includes a heel end, a toe end, a front face arranged to impact a golf ball, and a back face disposed rearwardly of the front face. A perimeter weighting element protrudes rearwardly away from the front face and defines a cavity in the back face. The perimeter weighting element includes a top rail and a sole. A plurality of ribs are disposed in the cavity for eliminating undesirable vibrations in the golf club head when the front face impacts a golf ball and for attenuating other vibrations in the golf club head. Each of the ribs extends generally radially relative to the cavity from an inner end to an outer end that merges with the perimeter weighting element. An elliptically shaped geometric region is formed in a bottom surface of the cavity for assisting the plurality of ribs in eliminating the undesirable vibrations and in attenuating the other vibrations.

This invention provides methods of treatment using retro-inverso peptides derived from interleukin-6 (IL-6) having between 15 and about 40 amino acids, and including the sequence that is retro-inverso with respect to SEQ ID NO: 1, i.e. wherein said peptide comprises the sequence D-Glu-D-Ala-D-Met-D-Lys-D-Pro-D-Leu-D-Asn-D-Leu-D-Asn-D-Asn-D-Glu-D-Ala-D-Leu-D-Ala-D-Glu. The peptides of the invention have the same activity as native IL-6 and also have neurotrophic activity. The peptides of the invention are also less susceptible to proteolytic degradation in vivo because of their D-amino acid linkage.
