An integral radio pager within each remote switch of a switching system with all pagers in the remote switches sharing the same paging service number with respect to a public paging service. When a central processor that is controlling the operation of all remote switches performs a maintenance restart operation with respect to one of the remote switches, the central processor requests that the public paging service page the common service number. The central processor also provides the paging service a paging message that defines which remote switch is to respond to the page. Each integral pager is responsive to the page to interrupt an associated remote processor. In turn, each remote processor is responsive to the pager to examine the paging message and only responds if the remote processor finds its own identification number in the paging message. In addition, the remote switches can each have an integral cellular telephone circuit that share a common telephone number thereby reducing the cost of providing the cellular telephone service. When the central processor wants to establish a data communication link with the remote switch via a cellular telephone call, the central processor requests that the public paging service page the common service number and provides a paging message to the public paging service. The paging message defines the identification number of the remote switch that is to respond to the page. A remote processor is responsive to the paging message to set up a data call via the integral cellular circuit to the central processor.

A PCS switching system and wireless set that allow the wireless set to control the processing of incoming calls regardless of whether the base station on which the wireless set is registered has capacity to complete a call to the wireless set. When an incoming call is received for a wireless set, a central computer providing overall control of the PCS system directs this call to a paging zone controller of a paging zone in which the wireless set is registered on a base station. If the base station does not have capacity to handle that call, the paging zone controller transmits a page pending message via the base station and a paging channel to the wireless set informing the wireless set that a page is pending and that the wireless set must find a base station with idle capacity. If the wireless set cannot find a base station with idle capacity within the paging zone, the wireless set transmits to the PCS switching system via the paging zone controller a page pending response message that specifies the operations that the PCS system is to perform with respect to the incoming call. The wireless set can specify the call coverage system to which the incoming call is to be routed. In addition, The wireless set can specify a message that will be given to the calling party of the incoming call by the call coverage system. The wireless set can specify that the incoming call is to be placed on hold until the wireless set can find a base station having call capacity to complete the incoming call to the wireless set.

A mobility management system and a traditional telecommunication switching system provide telecommunication terminal features by the mobility management system executing a software architecture that utilizes a unique terminal management application for each type of wireless terminal and a unique terminal emulator application for each type of telecommunication link that interconnects the mobility management system to the telecommunication switching system. There is an individually assigned telecommunication link for each wireless terminal. The terminal management applications and the terminal emulator applications communicate utilizing an internal message protocol. In response to a wireless terminal requesting actuation of a feature, a terminal management application converts that request into the required internal protocol messages and transmits the internal protocol messages to the terminal emulator application that controls the telecommunication link assigned to the wireless terminal. In response to the internal protocol messages, the terminal emulator application emulates the type of telecommunication terminal that normally would be connected to the assigned telecommunication link. The telecommunication switching system is responsive to the emulation to provided the requested feature as if telecommunication terminal was connected to the assigned link. The responses of the telecommunication switching system received via the assigned telecommunication link are converted to internal protocol messages and transmitted back to the terminal management application. The terminal management application converts and transmits the responses to the wireless terminal. The same internal protocol messages are used to invoke a particular feature regardless of the telecommunication terminal type or telecommunication link type.

An audio/video monitoring system is disclosed, comprising a combination of one or more set-top boxes and application servers in a service provider's network. The set-top boxes and applications services are part of a multiple services operator's (MSO) network, such as that of a cable company. Cameras and/or microphones which are directly connected to a set-top box are the sources of media signals, which the set-top box transmits to an application server. The application server continually receives the media signals from one or more set-top boxes, and determines which subset of the received media signals to forward to a selected output device, such as a television connected to another set-top box or a cellular telephone. The application server then forwards media signals of interest to the output device, such as when motion or a loud noise is detected in a media signal received from the set-top box or boxes.

Assigning one telephone link to each wireless set and connecting each of the assigned telephone links to all of a plurality of PCS systems. Each of the PCS systems has a plurality of base stations on which wireless sets can register. When an incoming call is received for a wireless set by a switching system terminating the telephone links, the switching system transmits a new call message on the telephone link assigned to the wireless set. The PCS system on which the wireless set is registered responds to the new call message by establishing a connection from the wireless set to the telephone link. The other PCS systems monitor the state of the call so that if the wireless set physically moves to a base station connected to a new PCS system, the new PCS system can continue the call without interruption or the switching system having to perform any additional operations. Also, the PCS systems can be relatively small. When additional wireless sets are added, it is only necessary to add another PCS system and to connect all of the telephone links identified with wireless sets to the new PCS system.

A method and apparatus for transmitting audio information and digital images via a wireless switching network by performing the operations of starting a photo or audio session by a digital camera or audio appliance; connecting the digital camera or audio appliance to a wireless telecommunication terminal; reserving bandwidth on the wireless switching network; transmitting digital images or audio information between the digital camera or audio appliance and a centralized database via a first path on the wireless switching network; and establishing a second path for transmission of digital images or audio information upon the first path being interrupted using the reserved bandwidth for the second path.

A method is disclosed that enables a data-processing system, such as a private branch exchange, to detect and disconnect looping communication channels, without some of the costs, disadvantages, and limitations of techniques in the prior art. The illustrative embodiment of the present invention provides detection of looping communication channels at the point where the loop begins. By detecting at the beginning point of the loop, the illustrative embodiment has the advantage of de-allocating call resources sooner than some techniques in the prior art. This enables the call resources to be reused faster for subsequent incoming and outgoing calls. Faster reuse is advantageous because it can lower the call blocking characteristic, which is related to the probability of a new call not being set up due to lack of communication channel resources.

A PCS switching system where a wireless set registers on a base station regardless of whether the base station has capacity to complete a call for the wireless set. When an incoming call is received for the wireless set, a central computer providing overall control of the PCS system directs this call to a paging zone controller of a paging zone in which the wireless set is registered. If the base station does not have capacity to handle that call, the paging zone controller transmits a message via the base station and a paging channel to the wireless set informing the wireless set that a page is pending and that it must find a base station with idle capacity. The wireless set does this by listening to the paging channel until a base station is determined that has idle capacity. The base stations periodically transmit on the paging channel, and each of their messages includes the present capacity of the base station. The wireless set establishes communication with the new base station and ceases to be in communication with the original base station. Since the wireless set is already registered with the paging zone controller, it is not necessary for the paging zone controller to re-register the wireless set with the wireless switching network when the wireless set moves from one base station to another base station within the same paging zone.

Utilizing a bridged line appearance feature in a switching system to allow additional individual PCS systems to be added as the number of wireless sets increases. For each wireless set, a bridged line appearance is administered in the switching system having a group of shared line appearance telephone links where the number of telephone links in each group is equal to the number of individual PCS systems. When the switching system receives a call for a particular wireless set, the switching system signals the incoming call on each telephone link that is part of the shared line appearance group for that particular wireless set. The PCS system on which the particular wireless set is presently registered responds to the incoming call signal by establishing a call between the particular wireless set and the incoming call. During the call, if the wireless set physically moves and establishes communications with a base station of another PCS system, the other PCS system becomes active on the shared line appearance telephone link assigned to the wireless set on the other PCS system. The original PCS system becomes inactive on the shared line appearance telephone link associated with the wireless set when the wireless set transfers itself to the other PCS system. This allows the wireless set to be "handed off" to the other PCS system without the PCS systems having to directly implement the "handoff" operation.
