    摘要: According to one embodiment of the present invention, a fly height of a read/write head in a disc drive is actively controlled as the read/write head is positioned over a rotating disc with a patterned media. The patterned media includes ridges and grooves in servo wedges in the patterned media. According to another embodiment of the present invention, an estimated fly height of the read/write head is compared with a desired fly height to generate a control signal. The control signal is used to apply a voltage difference across a piezoelectric layer joining the read/write head to a slider to move the read/write head relative to the slider and adjust the fly height of the read/write head. According to another embodiment of the present invention, a map of ridges and grooves in the patterned media is generated and the fly height of the read/write head is actively controlled based on information in the map.

    摘要: To allow for adjusting the fly height of a read/write head carried by a slider, a shear transducer is added to the slider. The shear transducer comprises a layer of piezoelectric material added to the slider so that the portion of the slider carrying the read/write head can be moved when the shear transducer is sheared. To cause the shear transducer to shear, a voltage is applied across the piezoelectric layer. To control the movement of the transducer, a closed-loop control system is used. The control system senses the spacing between the read/write head and the disc surface, compares the sensed spacing to a desired spacing, and adjusts the voltage applied to the shear transducer to reduce the difference between the actual and desired spacing.

A primary bearing feature is formed on the disc facing surface forward of the trailing slider edge and has a bearing surface. A plurality of pads is formed on the disc facing surface between the primary bearing feature and the trailing slider edge. Each of the pads has an upper surface that is discrete from the upper surfaces of the other pads. An airflow barrier wall is positioned adjacent the plurality of pads to at least partially shield the plurality of pads from airflow from the primary bearing feature.

    摘要: A slider having a slider body is provided for actively controlling a fly height of the slider relative to a data storage disc. A first plurality of beams are affixed to a back surface of the slider body. The beams are disassociated from one another and are constructed of deformable material. Each beam, in response to an applied electrical control signal is deformable in a first dimension parallel to the back surface of the slider body. Deformation of the first plurality of beams in response to an applied electrical control signal affects slider fly height by changing one of slider body crown and cross curvatures to a greater extent than along the other. In accordance with other embodiments, multiple layers of deformable beams are attached to a slider. In yet other embodiments, piezoelectric material layers having anisotropic properties are substituted for beam layers.

    摘要: An improved microactuator magnetic circuit having a simplified assembly, reduced field leakage, and improved passivation methods is disclosed. To simplify assembly, a single magnet is polarized in two magnetic regions so that the single magnet is functionally similar to two separate magnets. In addition, the magnetic circuit can be produced without a top keeper. Field leakage is reduced by expanding the bottom keeper. Finally, corrosion-resistant alloys with acceptable magnetic properties are used in forming the keeper.
