Abstract: IN THE METHOD DESCRIBED IN U.S. PAT. NO. 3,582,504, WHICH IS ASSIGNED TO THE ASSIGNEE OF THIS APPLICATION, CONTAMINANT CATION-EXCHANGE RESIN IS SEPARATED FROM ANIONEXCHNAGE RESIN IN A CONTAMINANT SEPARATION ZONE BY DELIVERING AN INTERMEDIATE-DENSITY LIQUID TO THE RESIN IN AN AMOUNT SUFFICIENT TO PERMIT THE ANION-EXCHANGE RESIN TO FLOAT AND THE CONTAMINANT CATION-EXCHANGE RESIN TO SINK. THE INTERMEDIATE-DENSITY LIQUID HAS A DENSITY BETWEEN THE DENSITIES OF THE ANION AND CATION-EXCHANGE RESINS. IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE PRESENT INVENTION, THE INTERMEDIATEDENSITY LIQUID IS CONTINUOUSLY DELIVERED TO THE RESIN, AND IS INTERMITTENTLY WITHDRAWN FROM A LOWER PORTION OF THE CONTAMINANT SEPARATION ZONE. THE INTERMITTENT WITHDRAWAL OF LIQUID PRODUCES HIGH FLOW RATES THROUGH THE RESIN, AND AIDS IN RELEASING CATION-EXCHANGE RESIN THAT MAY HAVE BEEN ENTRAINED IN THE BED.
