Abstract: Water soluble polymers are prepared by the process of reacting a first monomer selected from the group consisting of maleic acid, maleic anhydride and alkali metal salts of maleic acid with at least one other copolymerizable monomer in water in the presence of 18 - 40 parts by weight of persulfate catalyst per 100 parts by weight of monomer. The catalyst is preferably potassium persulfate. The resulting polymers are useful ingredients in detergent compositions, especially those used for machine dishwashing.
