    摘要: A gas generating system (10) includes a tubular outer housing (12) having a longitudinal axis (L) and one or more apertures (12d) formed therealong to enable fluid communication between an interior of the outer housing and an exterior of the outer housing. A tubular inner housing (70) is positioned within the interior of the outer housing (12). The inner housing (70) includes one or more apertures (70d ) formed therealong to enable fluid communication between an interior of the inner housing and an exterior of the inner housing. A first tubular baffle (80) is provided for cooling and regulating a flow of gas produced by the gas generating system (10). The first baffle (80) has a plurality of corrugations (80c) formed therealong and is positioned between the inner housing (70) and the outer housing (12) to define a gas flow channel (82) extending between the first baffle (80) and the inner housing (70). The first baffle also includes an opening (80e) formed therein to enable fluid communication between the gas flow channel (82) and an exterior of the gas flow channel. The corrugations (80c) are spaced apart from the inner housing (70) to provide a corresponding plurality of constricted gas flow passages (84) extending between the corrugations (80c) and the inner housing (70). The constricted passages (84) provide alternating compression and expansion of gases flowing along the gas flow channel (82), thereby facilitating cooling and filtration of the gases.

    摘要: A multi-chamber gas generating system (10) has a housing (12) with openings (24) formed in a wall thereof. A gas-tight internal divider (42) separates the housing into two chambers (80, 80′). A gas generating sub-assembly (100) incorporating a baffle system is positioned in the first chamber (100). The sub-assembly (100) includes a first tubular member (44) and a second tubular member (52) positioned within the first member. The first and second members have openings (49, 54) formed therein to enable fluid communication between an interior of the second member (52) and the housing openings (24). The housing openings (24) are axially displaced from the first member opening (49) such that combustion products flow in a first axial direction between the first member opening and the housing opening. The first member opening (49) is axially displaced from the second member openings (54) such that combustion products flow in a second axial direction between the second member openings (54) and the first member opening (49). The second axial direction is substantially opposite from the first axial direction. A second sub-assembly (100′) in second housing chamber (80′) includes third and fourth tubular members (44′, 52′) similar to the first and second members and having openings therein axially displaced relative to each other such that combustion products flow in the second axial direction between the third member opening (49′) and the housing openings (24), and in the first axial direction between the fourth member openings (54′) and the third member opening (49′).

A quantity of a gas generant composition (16) extends along a portion of the interior of the inner housing (14). The gas generant (16) has a substantially “C”-shaped cross-section with a slot (24) extending along the length of the gas generant (16). The gas generant slot (24) is oriented facing the inner housing orifice(s) (20). A filter (15) is positioned intermediate the inner housing orifice(s) (20) and the outer housing orifice(s) (22) for filtering combustion products generated by combustion of the gas generant composition (16). An igniter (40) is operatively coupled to the gas generant composition (16) so as to enable fluid communication between the igniter (40) and the gas generant composition (16) upon activation of the inflator (10). The slotted, “C”-shaped cross section of the gas generant (16) provides a greater exposed gas generant surface area than would be achievable without the slot (24). This enhances the ignition and burning of the gas generant composition (16) upon inflator activation.

    摘要: An inflator for a vehicle occupant restraint system. The inflator includes a cylindrical outer wall having a longitudinal axis and a first opening formed therealong for enabling fluid communication between an interior of the inflator and an exterior of the inflator. A first inflation fluid source is positioned within the outer wall. A baffle system is fluidly interposed between the first inflation fluid source and the outer wall for conveying inflation fluid between the first inflation fluid source and the outer wall, and for cooling the inflation fluid. A second opening enables fluid communication between the first inflation fluid source and the baffle system, and a third opening enables fluid communication between the baffle system and the outer wall. The first opening is substantially radially aligned with the second opening. An expanded metal mesh buffer may be positioned between within the baffle system. Openings enabling fluid communication between the baffle system and the exterior of the baffle system, any openings provided within the baffle system, and the opening enabling fluid communication between the interior and exterior of the inflator housing are cooperatively positioned to direct the flow of an inflation through the baffle system in directions substantially perpendicular to and/or substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis. Also disclosed is a vehicle occupant restraint system incorporating an inflator in accordance with the present invention.

    摘要: A gas generating system (10) including a filter assembly (36) formed from a plurality of nodules (36b) positioned and secured in relation to each other so as to form a porous structure (36a). In one embodiment, the nodules (36b) are metallic and are secured in relation to each other using either a sintering process or a brazing process. The nodules (36b) may be bonded directly together, or the nodules may be secured within a metallic matrix material. The gas generating system may also include a first baffle plate (40) positioned between the plurality of nodules (36b) and a gas source of the gas generating system (10), and a second baffle plate (42) positioned between the plurality of nodules (36b) and a housing wall (12c) of the gas generating system (10). The baffle plates (40, 42) provide added structural integrity to the porous structure (36a) and increase the length of a tortuous flow path of gases through the filter assembly (36). Apertures (40a, 42a) and are provided in the baffle plates (40, 42) to aid in directing the flow of gases through the porous structure (36b), thereby ensuring a tortuous flow path for the gases. A vehicle occupant protection system (480) incorporating the filter assembly (36) is also described.

In another aspect of the invention, the inflator (10) includes a longitudinal enclosure (22) having a substantially uniform cross-sectional area along at least a portion of the enclosure, and a gas generant composition (24) positioned along the portion of the enclosure (22). The gas generant composition (24) is distributed substantially uniformly along the portion of the enclosure (22). A plurality of gas exit apertures (40) is formed along the portion of the enclosure (22) to enable fluid communication between the enclosure (22) and an exterior of the enclosure. The total number of apertures (40) along the enclosure (22) is inversely proportional to a desired rate of propagation of a combustion reaction of gas generant positioned between the apertures (40).
