A preferred embodiment of the first aspect of the present invention relates to an apparatus for Active Network Guidance and Emergency Logic (ANGEL). ANGEL is a computer based program designed to function preferably in the mission computer on a vehicle, preferably an aircraft The program is preferably installed as part of an aircraft's Operational Flight Program (OFP) card(s) in the mission computer. ANGEL new versions and updates can be installed along with OFP updates. A second aspect of the present invention is a method for integrating and interacting with vehicle subsystems and controller subsystems, to prevent mishaps and accidents during a mission. ANGEL can prevent aircrew and aircraft problems by providing cueing or automation of emergency tasking, displaying procedures for aircrew to respond in emergency situations and providing assistance to an incapacitated pilot. In addition, ANGEL improves aircrew and aircraft survivability by reducing susceptibility to air to air and ground to air threats, reducing controlled flight into terrain and midair collisions and aiding in successful ejection from unrecoverable aircraft.

Methods of constructing plasma actuating cascade arrays for actively controlling airflow over rotorcraft blades are described herein. These methods may include providing plasma actuating cascade arrays that include dielectrics and electrodes. The electrodes and dielectrics are electrically operated to generate plasma clusters, and to induce directional airflows in response to the plasma clusters. The methods may also include configuring the plasma actuating cascade arrays based, at least in part, on characteristics of the rotorcraft blades and characteristics of flight regimes and scenarios.

A system and method for cooling at least a portion of an engine are provided. The engine is cooled using a fuel, such as a high heat sink fuel, that is subsequently used for combustion in the engine. The fuel can be used to cool one or more of the gases and/or components in the engine, thereby cooling the engine including an exhaust nozzle. For example, the fuel can be circulated through one or more heat exchanging devices that are disposed inside or outside a passage of the engine, and the fuel can absorb thermal energy from the engine or air that flows in the engine passage. In any case, the cooling of the engine can result in a reduction to the infrared signature of the engine.
