    摘要: A rotary positioner is rotatably mounted upon a reciprocating carriage of a optical disk drive. To detect and indicate one of a plurality of possible orientations of the disk drive, a side bias force is applied to the rotary positioner in a direction orthogonal to the radius of the disk drive. It has been found that each orientation has a side bias at which gravity effects are removed from the rotary positioner. At these points of gravity accommodation, certain instabilities in servo operation occur. Since each orientation requires a different side bias force to create the respective servo instabilities, the side bias force causing such instability indicates the drive orientation. Two modes of testing for orientation are disclosed. The carriage positioner is actuate for causing a momentary uncorrected radial movement of the carriage. The response of the carriage servo is measured in one of two ways. The uncorrected momentary carriage motion is detected either by detecting changes in a position error signal of either the rotary position or the carriage.

    摘要: An actuator arm for a rotary actuator assembly of a disc drive comprises a substantially planar sheet of pliable material defining a longitudinal actuator arm having longitudinal edges, a distal end supporting the transducer, a proximal end supporting an actuator coil. Strut means integral with the sheet extends substantially normal to the plane of the sheet along at least a portion of at least one longitudinal edge and the proximal end of the arm to provide rigidity to at least a portion of the arm. In one embodiment, an integral strut portion defines a support for the actuator coil. In another embodiment, integral strut portions extend along opposite longitudinal edges to a location proximal the distal end to define a rigid portion between the strut portions and a flexible suspension region distal to the rigid portion.

    摘要: Apparatus and method for adjusting an actuator mechanical response characteristic in a data handling system, such as a disc drive. An actuator rotates about a pivot system to move a read/write head adjacent a recording surface, the pivot system comprising a stationary shaft and a bearing asesmbly comprising a stationary inner race coupled to the shaft and a rotatable outer race coupled to the actuator. A fastener is provided to engage the shaft and apply an initial amount of axially directed force on the inner race. A broad spectrum excitation is applied to the actuator and a mechanical response characteristic of the actuator is measured. The fastener is repetitively adjusted to increase the amount of axially directed force until the measured mechanical response characteristic of the actuator reaches a desired level.
