Magnetic tape devices encounter read and/or write errors when the tape is not being passed across the head with the proper tension and/or skew angle. According to one embodiment, a system which corrects for these problems comprises a head having an array of at least one of readers and writers, a drive mechanism for passing a magnetic recording tape over the head, a skew-inducing mechanism coupled to the head for adjusting a skew angle of a longitudinal axis of the array relative to a direction normal to a direction of tape travel over the head, and a controller in communication with the head. The system also determines a tape dimensional stability state of the tape and adjust the skew angle away from normal to the direction of tape travel and lowers a tension of the tape across the head if the tape dimensional stability state is in a contracted state.

The invention is an optical disk drive which controls mechanical feedback to a focus servo actuator by shifting the phase of the feedback along its path back to the servo an additional 180 degrees to eliminate the degradation of the phase margin and prevent servo instability. The phase shift may be induced at any practical location along the feedback path. The phase shift is preferably induced by creating a slit or opening in the base of the optical disk drive. The opening must be positioned properly, shaped appropriately, and large enough to create a new base resonant frequency which prevents the opposite sides thereof from vibrating in phase. Alternatively, the phase shift may be induced by altering other components in the feedback path. For example, the phase shift can be induced by modifying the spindle motor assembly to create a new spindle resonant frequency.

The magnetic flux created by the magnetic rotor through the ferromagnetic mount creates a magnetic bias force on the rotor bearing surface. Described are embodiments of an invention for customizing the range of acceptable write conditions to a tape of a tape cartridge that contracts or expands laterally based on environmental conditions. The tape drive utilizes servo information to determine if the tape has expanded or contracted from the nominal dimension and to determine the magnitude of the expansion or contraction. In the case of expansion, the magnitude of the determined expansion and the stored maximum amount of contraction must be below a predetermined threshold value to allow a write. In the case of contraction, the magnitude of the determined contraction and the stored magnitude of expansion must be below the same predetermined threshold value to allow a write. If the determined magnitude of contraction or expansion is greater than the stored magnitude of contraction or expansion, respectively, then the new extreme is stored.

A cartridge which comprises an adapter cartridge and a caddy is employed for containing a hubless optical disk which can be processed in a standard optical disk drive for cartridges, such as an optical disk drive for an optical disk storage library. The adapter cartridge and the caddy are each provided with a recess so that when the adapter cartridge and the caddy are mated an enclosure is provided for the disk. The adapter cartridge carries a floating hub which engages a spindle in a drive for rotating the disk. The standard drive has a shutter arm which is employed for first ejecting the adapter cartridge from the drive and then is employed for ejecting the caddy and the disk from the adapter cartridge. This makes the caddy and disk readily accessible to a picker of a storage library for transport purposes or to an operator.
