    摘要: A method and apparatus for replenishing toner based on the electric current used over time by the exposure subsystem. Toner take-out for each image is estimated by measuring the current used by the exposure system, subtracting the quiescent current, integrating over a page or frame, and multiplying by a predetermined value that indicates the amount of toner required by the image, based on the average current used for the exposure and other process parameters. These calculations are done either in hardware or in software. The replenishment system is used to add the correct amount of toner to the developer station to maintain the toner concentration at an approximately constant aim value.

    摘要: An image forming method which forms a two color toner image or an image made up of two types of toners of the same color includes forming a first image with discharged area development (DAD) and a second image with charged area development (CAD). Resolution and sharpness of the first toner image is improved if the second toner image is formed by imagewise exposing a photoconductive member through a transparent base. Scavenging of the first toner image by the development of the second toner image and other aspects of the method are improved by use of a rotating magnetic core to drive a developer containing hard magnetic carrier in a soft brush through contact with the electrostatic image.

    摘要: An electrostatic latent image on a photoconductor of an electrophotographic device is developed by a gray scale monocomponent nonmagnetic development system using a combination of AC and DC bias voltages applied to a developer roller and a monocomponent nonmagnetic developer applied to the developer roller by an adder roller. The developer comprises a mixture of toner particles charged to one polarity and transparent beads charged to the opposite polarity, by triboelectric charging in bulk in an alternating field between the two rollers, rather than by friction contact with apparatus surfaces. The adder roller applies the charged mixture to the developer roller for developing the latent image in an electric field to an image density determined by the magnitude of the DC bias. A DC bias may be applied to the adder roller, especially to provide a gradient relative to the DC component of the developer roller bias for driving the bulk charged mixture onto the developer roller. A doctor blade is usable to smooth the toner into a selective thickness layer on the developer roller. The developer roller may have an uncoated semiconductive surface layer, or one covered by a non-conductive coating. The system provides greater uniformity of triboelectrical charging and reduced sensitivity to surface contamination.

    摘要: A developer station and method for an electrographic printer is provided that reduces developer agitation. The developer station includes a sump of magnetic developer, and a magnetic brush roller mounted above sump and having a rotatable magnetic core surrounded by a substantially cylindrical toning shell rotatably mounted with respect to the core. The toning shell defines a nip at its closest point to the photoconductor element. A tangent line tangent to the cylindrical toning shell at the nip is oriented substantially vertically, and the magnetic developer is applied to the toning shell at an angular distance of no more than about 120° from the nip. The toning shell may be eccentrically mounted with respect to the magnetic core and is substantially closest to the rotatable magnetic core within about +30° and −30° from the nip. Such a configuration advantageously reduces the residence time of the developer on the toning shell.
