摘要:
A method and apparatus for detecting a signal to determine on-track/off-track and/or a track cross direction, using a detection signal corresponding to a reflected main light beam and detection signals respectively corresponding to reflected first and second sub light beams, and an optical recording and/or reproducing apparatus using the same are provided. When detection signals respectively corresponding to one side portions, in a direction corresponding to a radial direction of the optical information storage medium, of the respective main light beam and first and second sub light beams are referred to as a first main signal, a first sub signal, and a second sub signal, respectively, the method and apparatus include obtaining a first operational signal, which is used to determine on-track/off-track and/or a track cross direction, by performing a subtraction on the combination of the first and second sub signals, and the first main signal.

A compatible optical pickup, including first and second light sources for emitting lights with different wavelengths and first and second photodetectors for detecting an information signal and/or an error signal, and a method of detecting the amount of output light using the compatible optical pickup. The first and second photodetectors monitor the amount of light output from the second and first light sources respectively such that no extra front photodetectors are required. Thus, the number of optical component parts included in the optical pickup can be reduced, thereby lowering the manufacturing costs for the optical pickup. Also, there is no need to secure a space in a base where a front photodetector is to be installed, so the base is simplified. Thus, inferior moldings are reduced, and the durability of a mold can be prolonged.

An optical pickup for a recording medium includes a light source, an objective lens, a main photodetector, and a front photodetector. The configuration of the optical pickup enables converging or diverging of light to be incident on a plate beam splitter so that light can be received at an effective light receiving region of a front photodetector without interference due to internal reflection occurring in the plate beam splitter. In the alternative, a wedge beam splitter in the optical pickup includes first and second mirror planes at a predetermined angle to transmit and reflect incident light at a predetermined ratio. In the optical pickup, an amount of light that is exactly proportional to an output power of the light source can be detected, where the output power of the light source can be accurately controlled, thereby improving a linearity of the output power of the light source.

An actuator for an optical pickup includes a first permanent magnet for supporting an objective lens. A focusing coil is wound around the circumference of the first permanent magnet for providing a driving force for vertical movement of the first permanent magnet. A plurality of tracking coils are placed at predetermined portions of the circumference of the first permanent magnet and provide a driving force for lateral movement of the first permanent magnet. A second permanent magnet is installed around the first permanent magnet and is separated from the first permanent magnet by a predetermined distance, for levitating the first permanent magnet which has the objective lens and the focusing and tracking coils disposed thereon, by interacting with the first permanent magnet. Therefore, the objective lens is supported by a magnetic levitation method and the disadvantages of a complicated bobbin assembly and difficulties in manufacturing and assembling the actuator can be avoided, further increasing the manufacturing productivity of the actuator.

An optical pickup device corresponding to a plurality of media is provided. The optical pickup device includes a light emitting system and a light receiving system including a plurality of light sources and a light transmission system shared by the light emitting system and the light receiving system, configured to irradiate light on a medium, and receive light reflected from the medium. The light transmission system irradiates light from the light emitting system to be appropriately focused on the medium, receives light reflected from the medium, and transports light to the light receiving system. The light transmission system includes one beam splitter corresponding to the light emitting system and the light receiving system and a position-changing collimating lens shared to correspond to a plurality of media. The position-changing collimating lens is disposed between the beam splitter and the medium, the position being controlled according to optical characteristics of the media.

An optical pickup compatible between a digital video disc read only memory (DVD-ROM) and a compact disc rewritable (CD-RW), which is a member of the CD family media. The compatible optical pickup includes: a first light source for emitting a first light having a predetermined wavelength; a second light source for emitting a second light having a long wavelength relative to the first light; an optical path changing unit for changing the traveling path of an incident light; an objective lens for condensing the first and second lights onto optical discs having different thicknesses, respectively; and a main photodetector for detecting an information signal and error signals from the first and second lights which have been reflected by the optical discs and passed through the optical path changing unit. The optical path changing unit includes a planar first beam splitter disposed on the optical path between the first light source and the objective lens, for changing the traveling path of the first light from the first light source, and a planar second beam splitter disposed on the optical path between the first beam splitter and the objective lens, for changing the optical paths of the first and second lights. The main photodetector comprises a first photodetector having four divided regions, a second photodetector having two divided regions, and a third photodetector having two divided regions, the second and third photodetectors being disposed at both sides of the first photodetector.
