摘要: A pointing device incorporates a force feedback mechanism driven by an actuator to convey physical sensations to the user. A position sensing apparatus is provided for monitoring the position of the user manipulable object in the pointing device. The sensing apparatus employs sensors that are directly or essentially directly connected to the user manipulable object to reduce backlash and are mounted in a way to eliminate off-axis loading on the sensors. The reduction of backlash produces more accurate position measurements, while the elimination of off-axis loading protects the sensors from damage to the internal mechanisms thereof. A computer controller processes the data from the sensors, and controls the actuator to produce feedback forces to the user manipulable object via the force feedback mechanism. The force feedback mechanism employs a gimbal mount having a pair of gimbal arms. One of the arms is a double sided or forked gimbal arm which substantially retains fully the joystick handle in all movements including applied torque about the axis of the handle as well as up-down and forward-backward forces. The improved constraint provides improved accuracy with reduced tolerances, resulting in better game play. The force feedback mechanism further includes a gear reduction system that utilizes an annular reduction gear portion for force transmission from the force feedback actuator to the user manipulable object. The annular reduction gear portion has gear teeth along an inner, concave side to produce a greater gear reduction, so that a smaller and cheaper actuator can be used. The gear reduction system is configured to take up less space. The pointing device is compact and accurate, and can be produced economically.

摘要: A computer game controller is provided that can be attached to a desktop having a lip of greater thickness located near an outer portion of the desktop and an underside surface located on an inner portion of the desktop. The lip has a substantially greater thickness than the remainder of the desktop and this poses a substantial challenge to the proper gripping and mechanical advantage required by a clamp device. In one embodiment of the present device, the present computer controller includes a housing with a substantially flat, planar bottom surface that will act as one side of the clamp. The controller has a clamp arm coupled to the housing so that a distal contact surface of the arm is substantially opposed to the bottom surface of the housing to operably compress a portion of a desktop therebetween. The arm is designed to have a length sufficient to allow the distal contact surface of the arm to reach the underside surface of the desktop, thus allowing the arm to grip a portion of the desktop located beyond the lip. Gripping an inner portion of the desktop allows the arm to increase its mechanical advantage in securing the object or computer peripheral to the desktop.

摘要: A scanner powered by the limited power available on a peripheral bus. In particular, the scanner can operate within the 2.2 watts provided over a USB connector. The scanner of the present invention uses a contact image sensor (CIS) which uses optics to distribute light from each light emitter to multiple pixel positions, preferably using a single LED for each color. An electric motor for driving the platen uses rare earth magnets to limit the power required. Instead of the traditional method of biasing the CIS scanner against the platen with a spring, the platen itself is spring-biased. The moveable spring biasing of a platen is possible because a worm drive motor is used allowing a helical thread on the worm drive to contact the platen gears as they move up and down as biased. Preferably, the helical thread of the worm gear has a single point of contact with a gear on the platen, further limiting the friction and allowing the platen to move up and down with respect to the stationary motor. Varied duty cycle digital pulses are used directly to drive the motor. Only the most significant bits are used to limit the amount of circuitry needed to calculate the speed. The digital controller circuit also operates on a 3.3 volt power supply. The platen itself is preferably made of a hard material to limit the footprint of the platen, and a small diameter platen is used.

The support members each include a support surface at a bottom thereof. The left and right support members in the extended position are configured to rest on the lap of a user in a lap mode by contacting legs of the user with the left support surface of the left support member and the right support surface of the right support member.

摘要: Embodiments of the present invention are directed to providing secure retention of the variable sensor and the rotational object to which it is attached for measuring rotation thereof. In one embodiment, a sensor retention apparatus comprises a rotational sensor including a sensor shaft which has a direction of insertion. The sensor shaft includes a retainer slot oriented nonparallel to the direction of insertion and extending from a first surface of the body through the sensor shaft to a second surface of the sensor shaft. A rotational member has a cavity shaped to receive the sensor shaft along the direction of insertion. The rotational member includes an interference slot disposed adjacent the cavity. A retainer member is configured to be inserted into the retainer slot of the sensor shaft of the rotational sensor and to include a protruded portion protruding from the second surface of the retainer slot into the interference slot of the rotational member. The protruded portion is deformed to form an interference contact with the interference slot of the rotational member.
