Abstract: A hot formed joined blank includes a first metal blank having an ultimate tensile strength of ≥about 1300 MPa to ≤about 2000 MPa and defining a first surface, a second metal blank having an ultimate tensile strength of ≥about 400 MPa to ≤about 1200 MPa and defining a second coated surface having a coating disposed thereon. The coating includes aluminum and silicon or in alternative variations, zinc. A third surface of the second metal blank is joined to the first surface of the first metal blank to form the hot formed joined blank. A weld nugget is disposed along a boundary between the first and second metal blanks that is configured to join the first and second metal blanks, where the weld nugget optionally includes less than or equal to about 1.5 weight percent aluminum or a microstructure comprising austenite and delta-ferrite.

Abstract: A method for manufacturing a coating-free press hardening steel (CFPHS) component comprises heating a CFPHS blank at a first predetermined heating rate to a first predetermined temperature in a first predetermined temperature range using a heater; transferring the CFPHS blank to a furnace; soaking the CFPHS blank in the furnace at a second predetermined temperature in a second predetermined temperature range for a predetermined period; and pressing and forming the CFPHS blank in a stamp/press to form a CFPHS component.

Abstract: A steel composition is provided. The steel composition includes 0.1-0.45 wt. % carbon (C), greater than 0-4.5 wt. % manganese (Mn), 0.5-5 wt. % chromium (Cr), 0.5-2.5 wt. % silicon (Si), greater than 0-2 wt. % copper (Cu), and a balance of iron (Fe). The combined concentration of the Mn, Cr, and Cu is greater than about 2 wt. %. The steel composition is configured to form a surface oxide layer comprising oxides of Cr, Si, and Cu after being subjected to press hardening. Press-hardened steel fabricated from the steel composition and a method of fabricating a press-hardened steel component from the steel composition are also provided.
