A powertrain is provided that includes a hybrid transmission with an input member, an output member, and a stationary member, and a first and a second electric machine. Only a single planetary gear set having a first member, a second member, and a third member is operatively connected between the input member and the output member. The first, the second, and the third members include a ring gear member, a sun gear member, and a carrier member. The powertrain includes a first, a second, a third, and a fourth selectively engageable torque-transmitting mechanism. Selective engagement of a different one or ones of the torque-transmitting mechanisms and selective operation of one or both electric machines establishes a series operating mode, an input-split operating mode, at least one electric-only operating mode, and at least one fixed gear operating mode between the input member and the output member.

A powertrain comprises a planetary gearing arrangement that includes two sun gear members, two ring gear members, a single carrier member, and an interconnecting member that connects either the two sun gear members or the two ring gear members. The powertrain includes an input member and an output member, one of which is connectable to the carrier member and the other of which is connectable to the first ring gear member. A first electric machine and a second electric machine are included in the powertrain. The second electric machine is operatively connected to the first sun gear member to drive the first sun gear member, and the first electric machine is operatively connected to drive that one of the second ring gear member and the second sun gear member which is not connected to the interconnecting member. A brake is selectively engageable to hold the input member stationary.

A vehicle includes an engine, fraction motor, final drive assembly, battery pack, and a supercapacitor module electrically connected to the battery pack. The vehicle also has first and second clutches and a controller. The clutches have opposite apply states. The first clutch connects an engine driveshaft to the motor to establish a neutral-charging mode. The second clutch connects an output shaft of the motor to the final drive assembly to establish a drive mode. The controller selects between the drive and neutral-charging modes in response to input signals. The drive mode uses energy from the supercapacitor module and battery pack to power the traction motor. The neutral-charging mode uses output torque from the engine to charge the supercapacitor module and battery pack. The clutches may be pnemauically-actuated, and the vehicle may be characterized by an absence of planetary gear sets.
