Abstract: A rotor for an electric machine includes strengthened structural elements effected through surface alloying and heating via an induction heating fixture. A rotor includes laminations formed to have internal cavities and structural members adjacent the cavities. A number of the laminations are stacked to form a lamination stack. An alloying material is applied to the lamination stack at the structural members. The lamination stack is placed in a fixture so that an inductor extends along the structural members and cooling elements extend through the cavities. A current is applied to the inductor to heat the structural members, alloying the alloying material into the structural members.

Abstract: A solenoid assembly is provided that includes male and female plungers and an electromagnetic coil configured to be energized to create a magnetic flux. Each plunger has a plunger face, where the female plunger face is configured to correspond with the male plunger face. The male plunger has a plurality of angled plunger steps that define the male plunger face, each angled plunger step including a corner having an angle in the range of 95 degrees to 115 degrees. The female plunger face has a similar, corresponding angled face. The solenoid assembly is suitable for use as a long stroke linear solenoid.

Abstract: A rotor for an electric machine includes a heat pipe cooling system. A rotor core has a number of cavities internal to the rotor core. The cavities are surrounded by a wall defined by the rotor core. A magnetic element disposed in the at least one cavity leaving a void in the at least one cavity between the magnetic element and the wall. A heat pipe evaporator is disposed in the void and conforms to the available space, contacting the magnetic element and the wall to remove heat from the rotor core.

Abstract: A radial flux electric motor includes a stator having a radially inner stator surface and stator windings arranged thereon. The motor also includes a rotor mounted inside the stator and configured to rotate relative thereto about an axis. The rotor has a rotor core defined by a rotor outer surface and includes magnetic poles configured to generate magnetic flux and defining flux leakage zones. The motor additionally includes a selective permeability sleeve arranged circumferentially on the rotor and fixed to the rotor outer surface, thereby establishing an airgap between the sleeve and the stator. The sleeve provides reinforcement to the rotor core and to the magnetic poles and includes regions of relatively high and relatively low magnetic permeability alternating around the rotor outer surface. The regions of relatively low magnetic permeability are arranged radially outward and across from the flux leakage zones to control magnetic flux distribution in the motor.
