Abstract: A method (60; 70) for processing data packets allows the same hardware that is used in a traffic-forwarding path to add timestamps to the data, which allow accurate measurements to be taken. By adding this function in the forwarding equipment itself, the measurements can be taken in a true operational network, i.e., under actual usage conditions. Moreover, if multiple systems in the traffic path support this functionality, the value of the measurements is enhanced to enable end-to-end path guarantees. One exemplary embodiment (10) of the present invention uses synchronized clocks to provide timestamps for use in performance monitoring within an operational system. Synchronized clock signals can be used to accurately time stamp incoming and outgoing packets to provide performance measurement of traffic through the system under actual operating conditions.

Abstract: A local area network (LAN) topology monitor including segment monitor nodes which report the presence of new end nodes to a network manager node. The segment monitors send a test-node message when requested by the network manager and inform the network manager of any test-node messages originating from other segments. The network manager uses the sequence of received new-node messages and test-node messages to determine the topology of the LAN. If one segment monitor reports a new node, the new node must be connected to the same segment as the reporting monitor. If multiple segment monitors report the presence of a new node, the network manager requests each reporting segment monitor to send a test-node message. Since the segment monitors report test-node messages received from other segment monitors, if only one segment monitor responds as having received a test-node message, then that segment contains the new node. Otherwise, the new node is off-segment. The presence of one or more bridges connected to particular segment may be similarly determined by having the network manager initiate on-segment test messages.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for processing a return path signal transmitted from a user device is described. In one example, an apparatus receives, and subsequently decodes, a return path signal that is transmitted from a user device. From the decoded signal, the type of user device transmitting the return path signal is determined. The apparatus then routes the return path signal to a media access control (MAC) processor that is specifically designed to process return path signals transmitted from the determined type of user device.

Abstract: Monitoring is done of communications which occur in a network of nodes, each communication being effected by a transmission of one or more packets among two or more communicating nodes, each communication complying with a predefined communication protocol selected from among protocols available in the network. The contents of packets are detected passively and in real time, communication information associated with multiple protocols is derived from the packet contents.

Abstract: A communications highway network system for the interactive communication of digital and analog information that incorporates LAN, MAN, and CATV technology to provide an information pathway of metropolitan size that has a spanning tree topology. The system is multiple drop that operates according a network protocol. The network protocol is based on modified TDM techniques, compensation for round trip loop delay, dynamic allocation of time slots on the network bus, and global synchronization. The protocol also permits concatenation of data packets to reduce overhead. Access to the network bus is controlled by a system allocator operating according to the network protocol. The allocator may allocate network bus bandwidth to simultaneously provide three levels of service for the system nodes to access the network bus, namely, isochronous, demand-based dedicated, and contention bandwidth allocation. This allocation method incorporates fairness to give all nodes sufficient bus access opportunities.
