A method to ventilate a rotary machine housed in a compartment having a ventilation air inlet and air exhaust, a variable speed ventilation fan and a temperature sensor, wherein the method includes: sensing a temperature level of the rotary machine; applying the sensed machine temperature level to a controller for the fan; drawing ventilation flow through the compartment and over the machine; determining whether the sensed machine temperature level is above a desired temperature level of the rotary machine, wherein the desired temperature level is determined by the controller, and the controller setting an operational condition of the fan to increase the ventilation flow through the compartment if the sensed machine temperature level is above the desired temperature level.

A method for detecting a fuel leak in a compartment is provided. The compartment includes at least one inlet and an exhaust outlet that is coupled in flow communication with the compartment and in flow communication with a fan. The method includes determining a fan speed, measuring a fuel leak gas concentration value, determining a fuel leak gas concentration limit value within the compartment based on the determined fan speed, comparing the measured fuel leak gas concentration value with the determined fuel leak gas concentration limit value, and generating at least one of an alarm signal and a trip signal based on the comparison.

A system for providing air from a multi-stage to a turbine includes a turbine having a high pressure input port and a low pressure input port. The system also includes a compressor having at least one high pressure extraction air output and at least one low pressure extraction air output. A valve is fluidly connected to the at least one high pressure extraction air output, at least one low pressure extraction air output and low pressure input port of the turbine. The valve is selectively operated to fluidly connect the at least one low pressure extraction air output with the low pressure input port during normal operating conditions and fluidly connect the at least one high pressure extraction air output and the low pressure input port during a turn down condition or below design temperature operation to enhance turbine engine performance.
