A communication system working according to an asynchronous transfer mode comprises ATM communication equipment units connected to one another, whereby a plurality of concentrator equipment units are connected to at least one of the ATM communication equipment units. The concentrator equipment units together with the corresponding ATM communication equipment units are thereby arranged in a ring line system. Within this ring line system, each of the concentrator equipment units is connected via a separate virtual path to, on the one hand, the corresponding ATM communication equipment unit and, on the other hand, to each of the remaining concentrator equipment units. A plurality of virtual connections having defined transmission capacities can be respectively conducted via the individual virtual paths. Particulars with respect to the transmission capacities already occupied for established virtual connections are kept separately for the individual virtual paths in the corresponding ATM communication equipment units and are updated with every set-up and clear-down of a virtual connection. According to the measure of these particulars, a new virtual connection is thereby allowed only given a transmission capacity on the respective, virtual path that is still adequate.

The number of switching matrices in the second coupling stage is for this purpose one more than double the quotient, rounded off to a whole number, of the difference between the connecting lines connected to the input end of one switching matrix in the first coupling stage and the maximum number of connecting lines or intermediate lines to be seized per multichannel connection and the difference between the number of intermediate line per group of intermediate lines increased by one and the maximum number of connecting lines or intermediate lines to be seized per multichannel connection.

To the switching node belongs at least one coupling element which has n input lines and n output lines optionally connectable to them via a space switch. To each of the input lines a buffer store is assigned in which k data packets are storable and which has m.ltoreq.k output terminals via which m data packets are simultaneously suppliable to the space switch having m.times.n input terminals and n output terminals. The storage addresses, under which the data packets to be routed are stored in the individual stores, are stored in accordance with the address signals contained in the data packets and stored in queue buffer stores assigned to the output lines. The queue buffer stores are cyclically accessible by a central control device for making available storage addresses. On the basis of storage addresses made available in such manner the central control device, on the one hand, controls the setting of the space switch and, on the other hand, the output of data packets from the buffer stores.
