Abstract:
An electronic book system includes an assessment module that determines how suitable a particular book is for conversion to audio presentation format. The extent of image content is determined and compared with the amount of text in the book. Images are categorized and then weighted based on factors including image size, context of image with respect to surrounding text, and repetition of the image. An overall assessment score is generated as a metric for how suitable the book is for conversion to audio format. Image weightings are also usable to determine which images may be provided to users along with the audio version.
Abstract:
A system and method for selective control of zoom adjustments in an electronic publication is disclosed. The method may include generating content for display on an electronic reading device; generating at least one style for the content, and storing the content and the at least one style on a computer readable medium. The generation of at least one style may include identifying at least a portion of the content for which at least one zoom level will be specified; specifying a base text size for the portion of the content; and specifying a first value to increment the base text size to a first zoom state text size. A method for rendering an electronic document on an electronic device may include storing content representing an electronic publication in a computer memory of the electronic device, the content including at least one style for a portion of the content, the at least one style including a base text size for the portion of the content and at least a first value to increment the base text size to a first zoom state text size; rendering the contents according to the at least one style; and incrementing the base text size for the portion of the content by the first value in response to a user input to zoom.
Abstract:
Digital graphic novel content is received and features of the graphic novel content are identified. At least one of the identified features includes text. Contextual information corresponding to the feature or features that include text is generated based on the identified features. The contextual information is used to aid translation of the text included in the feature or features that include text.
Abstract:
A system to process graphical elements within a book during assessment of the book for suitability for conversion to an audio format includes an image classification subsystem, an image processing subsystem, and a weighting subsystem. The image classification subsystem is configured to classify a graphical element based on at least one of a context of the graphical element and properties of the graphical element. The image processing subsystem is configured process the graphical element to create a processed graphical element, the processing responsive to the classification of the graphical element. The weighting subsystem is configured to produce a weighting corresponding to the processed graphical element, the weighting indicating an impact of the graphical element of suitability of the book for conversion to the audio format.

Abstract:
Digital graphic novel content is received and a machine-learning model applied to predict features of the digital graphic novel content. The predicted features include locations of a plurality of panels and a reading order of the plurality of panels. A packaged digital graphic novel is created that includes the digital graphic novel content and presentation metadata. The presentation metadata indicates a manner in which the digital graphic novel content should be presented based on the locations and reading order of the plurality of panels. The packaged digital graphic novel is provided to a reading device to be presented in accordance with the manner indicated in the presentation metadata.
Abstract:
A system for and method of displaying non-rectangular images in electronic content on an electronic device in accordance with exemplary embodiments may include identifying, using a template identification computing apparatus, an image shape template associated with a non-rectangular image that is part of electronic content to be displayed on the electronic device, determining, using a boundary region determination computing apparatus, a boundary region of the image shape template, placing, using an image placement computing apparatus, the non-rectangular image inside the boundary region of the image shape template and on the electronic content, flowing, using a text flow computing apparatus, text that is part of the electronic content outside and along the boundary region of the image shape template, and transmitting, using a communication computing apparatus, the electronic content along with the non-rectangular image to the electronic device via a network.

Abstract:
Locations and presentation orders of objects of interest (e.g., speech bubbles) in digital graphic novel content are identified such that expanded versions of the objects of interest can be presented to a reader. Specifically, digital graphic novel content is received and locations of interest regions (e.g., rectangular text regions of speech bubbles) in the content are identified by applying a machine-learned model to the content. Locations and presentation orders of objects of interest in the digital graphic novel content are identified based on the identified locations of the interest regions. The digital graphic novel content and presentation metadata including the locations and presentation orders of the objects of interest are provided to a reading device such that expanded versions of the objects of interest are presented to the user in accordance with the presentation metadata.
