A user moves the labeling printer on a storage object for printing the label data while a position module provides absolute position data so that the label data is accurately printed. The position module may be configured to receive data from navigation sensors indicating a first surface characteristic of the first surface, and to determine whether at least a portion of the print head is positioned over a second surface having a second surface characteristic different from the first characteristic, wherein the determination is made by detecting a characteristic other than the first surface characteristic as indicated by data received from the navigation sensors.
