Abstract: Water-base, clayey drilling fluids are made suitable for the drilling of deep wells by addition thereto of a copolymer of vinyl-sulfonic acid and an N-vinyl-carboxylic acid amide or Nvinyl-pyrrolidone and, optionally, a small proportion of an anion-active vinyl compound that is polymerizable under the action of free radicals.
