Embodiments of luminescent materials and articles include first and second particles of first and second inorganic host lattices. The first particles are capable of producing first emissions having one or more first emission peaks at one or more first wavelengths. The first emissions have a first decay half-life that is long enough for the first emissions to be perceptible to the human eye for a first time period that begins when appropriate excitation of the luminescent material is discontinued. The second particles are capable of producing second emissions having one or more second emission peaks at one or more second wavelengths. The second emissions have a second decay half-life that is longer than the first decay half-life by a decay time difference that is sufficient for the second emissions to be perceptible to the human eye for a second time period that begins after the first time period.

A method and system for identifying, tracking, and/or authenticating objects that is simple to apply and to use by an intended user, but is extremely difficult to counterfeit or compromise by an unintended user. Also disclosed is a multi-color, co-planar indicium made of a combination of printed patterns of multiple inks. The printed patterns may be modified by software-generated masks to ensure that the patterns are co-planar. The indicium is undecipherable unless irradiated with specified wavelengths of light radiation, filtered through specified spectral filters, and read and decoded by an electronic image reader. The indicium may be visible or covert. The indicium encodes unique true information about the object and may encode nonsensical or intentionally incorrect information as a further deterrent to unauthorized use. The method permits the indicia to be applied to objects at high processing speeds possible with inkjet printing.

Luminescent compositions are provided having improved color intensity and articles incorporating said luminescent compositions as security taggants, for example as anti-counterfeiting components in pharmaceutical packaging applications, or as aesthetic colorants that are generally usable in any application where luminescent coloration is desired. The luminescent compositions incorporate a particulate fluoropolymer that is blended with one or more luminescent pigments and/or luminescent dyes. These components are provided in a liquid medium in which the fluoropolymer particles are dispersed and with which the pigment(s)/dye(s) may or may not be soluble.
