Herbicidal preparations which contain: (a) water; (b) a bromoxynil component; and (c) at least one compound corresponding to the general formula (I): RO—(C2H4O)n(C3H6O)m—R′ (I) wherein RO represents an alcohol moiety selected from the group consisting of C1-6 monohydric alcohols, and C2-12 polyols having from 2 to 6 hydroxyl groups; n represents a number of from 1 to 50; m represents a number of from 0 to 10; and wherein each R′ represents a substituent independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and an ester group of the general formula, —CO—R″, wherein each R″ independently represents an alkyl group having from 5 to 29 carbon atoms; with the proviso that at least one R′ represents —CO—R″, are described. Also described is the enhanced penetration of leaves by bromoxynil-containing herbicidal preparations via the addition of at least one compound corresponding to the general formula (I), as well as methods for controlling plant growth using such preparations.

Suggested is an improved process for making polyol esters with improved colour quality by transesterification of polyols or their alkoxylation products with fatty acid alkyl esters, which is characterised in that the reaction is carried out in the presence of a reducing mineral or organic acid as a catalyst selected from the group consisting of (i) sulphuric or sulphonic acids with an oxidation value of sulphur of less than 6 or their salts, and/or (ii) phosphoric or phosphonic acids with an oxidation value of phosphor of less than 5 or their salts.
