    Abstract: Examples relate to access point signal estimation. In one example, a computing device may: receive a first pathloss value in a first frequency, the first pathloss value indicating a difference in transmit power of a particular access point and a received signal strength observed by a first access point; receive a second pathloss value in the first frequency, the second pathloss value indicating a difference in transmit power of the particular access point and a received signal strength observed by a second access point; receive a third pathloss value in a second frequency, the third pathloss value indicating a difference in transmit power of the particular access point and a received signal strength observed by the second access point in the second frequency; and generate, using the first, second, and third pathloss values, an estimated pathloss between the first access point and the particular access point in the second frequency.

In one example, a computing device may: identify, for a particular access point, a plurality of neighboring access points; identify, for each neighboring access point, a pathloss value that indicates a difference in a transmit power of the neighboring access point and a received signal strength observed by the particular access point; identify, from the neighboring access points, at least one adjacent access point, each adjacent access point having a pathloss value that is less than a pathloss threshold; generate a representative pathloss using the pathloss values of each adjacent access point; determine a target power level for the representative pathloss; and provide at least one of the neighboring access points with instructions that cause the at least one neighboring access point to adjust a power output level of the at least one neighboring access point.

    Abstract: Methods and systems are described for determining an optimal access point for a client device based on the relative difference between signal strengths of wireless signals received by the client device from access points. In particular, the signal strengths of wireless signals received by a client device from access points are determined without receipt of signal strength and/or transmit power information from the client device. Instead, the signal strength difference value may be determined based on known characteristics of signals transmitted by the access points and known characteristics of signals received by the access points from the client device. This relative difference value may thereafter be used to determine an appropriate access point to provide network access to the client device.
