    Abstract: Article exchanging grapples are disclosed herein for handling cylindrical objects such as film or tape cartridges, spherical objects or rectangular articles. The fingers of the grapples are shaped so that they substantially conform to a portion of the article being gripped except at the tips of the fingers. The tips are shaped to depart from the surface of the article gripped so as to provide a space for inserting fingers of another grapple. The fetching grapple has the same shaped fingers as the holding grapple. The fingers of the grapples are spring loaded so that when they are not holding an article the normal position of the fingers is slightly less than the cross-sectional width of the article to be held or exchanged. To exchange an article, the fetch grapple moves toward the article held by the hold grapple. The fetch grapple''s fingers contact the article and move along the surface of the article until they interpose themselves between the article and the tips of the fingers of the hold grapple. As the fetch grapple continues to move forward its fingers penetrate between the article and the fingers of the hold grapple spreading the fingers of the hold grapple away from the article. The fetch grapple has now become the hold grapple and can withdraw with the article in its grip.

    Abstract: Two cartridges are shown herein which have the capability of storing a folded endless loop of tape. The cartridges are designed so that by pneumatic pressure the loop of tape may be unloaded from the cartridge by a controlled unfolding and reloaded into the cartridge by a controlled folding. Two cartridges are shown, one containing a porous wall to permit the appropriate air flow to control the folding and unfolding, and the other containing air passages in non-porous walls to control the folding and unfolding.

    Abstract: The tape transport described herein utilizes a mandrel about which the tape may be helically wrapped. A rotor carrying a magnetic head is mounted between two halves of the mandrel so that as the head rotates, it sweeps out a track at an acute angle relative to the longitudinal dimension of the tape. Further, the transport has continuous compliant guides before and after the tape helically wraps the mandrel so that lateral disturbances and tension disturbances in the tape caused by the tape supply or the tape sink can be decoupled prior to the tape helically wrapping the mandrel. The entire tape transport, including compliant guides and mandrel, supports the tape with air bearings. The air bearing mandrel may be achieved hydrostatically, hydrodynamically or a combination of both. In addition to the guidance of the tape before and after the mandrel, at very high recording densities it may be desirable to add compliant edge guiding on the mandrel itself.
