Abstract: Disclosed is a digital spectrum analyzer wherein the spectral content at a plurality of frequencies wm is computed in response to Fourier transforms at each frequency of an analyzed signal at a plurality of discrete time intervals. The Fourier transforms over each interval are combined to indicate the Fourier transform over the entire interval being considered. A further disclosed feature relates to determining with a specific degree of certainty whether a frequency component is periodic. The determination is made by multiplying average power spectrum density over all the frequencies by a predetermined factor, dependent upon the degree of certainty desired. If the spectral density at a particular frequency is greater than the product, it can be assumed, with the predetermined degree of certainty, that the frequency is periodic. Another disclosed feature concerns automatically scaling the amplitudes of the spectral responses at a plurality of predetermined frequencies, whereby no off-scale readings are obtained.

Abstract: Disclosed are a system for and method of dividing or partitioning the total variance properties of a moving sheet into the components of: cross direction; long-term machine direction; short-term machine direction; total machine direction; cross direction; and profile. A single detector for the property is scanned at right angles to the sheet edges a plurality of times. During each scan the property is sampled a plurality of times to derive a profile contour. A computer responds to the sampled values to derive the variance components.

Abstract: The position of a dry line on a Fourdrinier wire is maintained at substantially the same location after a grade change for a fibrous product formed on the wire as before the change. In concert with control of the bone dry basis weight of the product and wire speed during the grade change, the stream flow of a fiber water slurry fed to a headbox spouting to the wire is controlled. Stream flow control is in response to indications of the bone dry basis weight of the product before and after the grade change, as well as the wire speed before and after the grade change.
