    Abstract: A method and apparatus for performing intra prediction mode partitioning predicts pixels of a video coding block using a plurality of intra prediction modes over a plurality of regions of the video coding block. Predictions can be based on reference arrays using at least one reference line above the block to be coded and/or using at least one reference column to the left of the block to be coded. Different prediction modes are used in different regions of the coding block. In at least one embodiment, the video coding block is split into a plurality of partitions in addition to having a plurality of intra prediction modes over different regions of the block. Signaling enables a decoder to determine the number of regions within a coding block. In at least another embodiment, prediction modes allowable within regions of a video coding block differ by one angular position.

    Abstract: The present principles relate to a method and device. A method for encoding a residual block comprises: obtaining (500) a first coding mode relative to a first 2D transform when coding the residual blocks according to a coding mode relative to a first 2D transform is enabled; obtaining (510) a second coding mode relative to a second 2D transform when coding the residual blocks according to a coding mode relative to a second 2D transform is enabled; and encoding (530) the residual block according to either said first coding mode or said second coding mode or both; the method is characterized in that enabling or disabling (520) the coding of the residual block according to said second coding mode depends on said first coding mode.     Abstract: Decoders can use prediction based on weighted distortion to determine information used to make decisions regarding motion vectors, reference pixels, and coding modes, similar to a corresponding encoder operation. Samples in and around a current block and samples of reference pictures are weighted and a distortion metric generated to determine the decisions. Embodiments are described for prediction modes such as Cross-component linear model (CCLM), Local Illumination Compensation (LIC), and Frame Rate Up-Conversion (FRUC). Various embodiments describe derivation of weighting factors used in the decision making, comprising inference by a decoder, basing weighting factors on a quantization parameter, local activity of a block, and samples of temporally close reference pictures.

    Abstract: A method and an apparatus for encoding a video are disclosed. For at least one block from a picture of said video, a first rate-distortion optimization is performed (602) for determining for a first splitting mode of said block into at least one first subblock, coding parameters of said at least one first subblock. At least one second rate-distortion optimization is performed (609) for determining for at least one second splitting mode of said block into at least one second subblock, coding parameters of said at least one second subblock. A best splitting mode for coding said block is determined (613) according to at least said first rate-distortion optimization and said second rate-distortion optimization, and said block is encoded (616) according to said best splitting mode. While performing (609) said at least one second rate-distortion optimization and when said at least one second subblock is located at a same position in the picture as said at least one first subblock and said at least one second subblock has a same width and same height as said at least one first subblock, at least one coding parameter of said at least one first subblock determined during said first rate-distortion optimization is used (605) for determining said coding parameters for said at least one second subblock.

    Abstract: Different implementations are described, particularly implementations for video encoding and decoding based on a linear model responsive to neighboring samples are presented. Accordingly, for a block being encoded or decoded in a picture, refined linear model parameters are determined for a current subblock in the block and for encoding the block, the local illumination compensation uses a linear model for the current subblock based on the refined linear model parameters. In a first embodiment, the number N of reconstructed samples increases with the available data for the subblock. In a second embodiment, partial linear model parameters are determined for the subblock and refined linear model parameters are derived from a weighted sums of partial linear model parameters. In a third embodiment, the subblocks are independently LIC processed.

    Abstract: A method and an apparatus are defined for displaying images on a flexible display in a head-mountable device (HMD). One or more flexible display devices may be inserted in the HMD. The one or more flexible display devices may be constrained by the HMD to take a particular curved form and wrap the field of view (FOV) of images displayed on the one or more flexible display devices for an improved user experience.
