A process of preparing an oxygen barrier coating using a compound of the general formula RaX3−aSi—Z—SiX3−aRa wherein Z is R′NH(R′NH)pR′, each R is selected from the group consisting of a hydrogen atom and a hydrocarbon group, each X is selected from the group consisting of an alkoxy group with 1 to 4 carbon atoms, a halogen atom, an oxime group or an acyloxy group, each R′ is a divalent hydrocarbon group having 1 to 12 carbon atoms; a is from 0 to 3 and p is 0 or 1. The invention further comprises compositions incorporating the above compound. Coatings prepared may be used in packaging applications as a top coat, or a primer for further coatings.

A process for treating a surface of a substrate to improve the oxygen, carbon dioxide, flavor and odor gas barrier properties of the substrate with an organic acid having at least two acid substituents selected from the group consisting of a polybasic carboxylic acid, a polymer of an unsaturated carboxylic acid and a co-polymer of an unsaturated carboxylic acid, by applying the acid on to the substrate to form a layer, and exposing the layer to moisture. A variety of other types of additives may be included in the coating applied to the substrate with the acid including compounds of the formula RaX3−aSi(CH2)nY, a condensation catalyst, a solvent, and/or a filler.

The reaction products of bis-aminosilanes and phenolic compounds provide improved barrier coating compositions. These compositions are particularly useful to reduce the diffusion of gases through organic polymer packaging materials, such as polypropylene, even in conditions involving high relative humidity.
