This bed comprises a front forwardly extending foot section having rearwardly extending side arms. Said side arms have similar, symmetrically disposed, horizontal offset portions raised above the horizontal plane of the bed mattress supporting fabric of the bed platform when the bed is in open sleeping position. In the closed position of the bed, the foot section projects rearwardly and said offset portions are then disposed below the horizontal plane of the mattress supporting fabric and hence in a depressed plane. The fabric is connected to each of a pair of zig-zag springs disposed alongside said depressed portions (in the closed position of the bed), at points disposed inwardly of the ends of the zig-zag springs, and also by a pair of helical tension springs to the side arms, at locations beyond the outer ends of said depressed portions. With such construction, persons sitting at the ends of the sofa (when the bed is closed) have a softer, more comfortable seat, because of the depressed side portions of the foot section and because of less tension on the fabric, and also more relaxing, softer seating between the ends of the sofa, because of use of less helicals to connect the fabric to the bed frame at the sides of said foot section. The ends of the zig-zag springs are furthermore received in the end helical springs on each side of the foot section to house and encase said ends.

This pull out sofa bed is an improvement of the sofa bed disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 3,984,883, granted Oct. 12, 1976. The change over the disclosure in said patent involves essentially several links different in figuration, and addition of a rivet. Primarily the change reduces the cost of manufacturing the bed with less material to accomplish the resulting operation. Also the spring actuated mechanism to retain the present bed in fully folded condition, was modified and allows for better closure of the bed.

A wall clearing reclining chair has two extension links which transmit forces which are generated during reciprocating movement of an armrest assembly at the armrest-mounting members thereof directly to base drive pivot pins which are located forwardly and downwardly relative to the armrest-mounting members. The chair also has wheel-mounted movable tracks which are reinforced at the wheel mountings. Stops are provided for affirmatively arresting movement of the chair seat in its closed upright position. Caster wheel assemblies are mounted at the rear of the chair. Hardware for this chair is likewise disclosed.

This invention adds a stabilizing system to the chair disclosed in our copending application Ser. No. 618,954, filed Oct. 2, 1975, and minimizes swaying side to side, and thereby maintaining the rigidity of the chair. The stabilizing system comprises a pair of paralleled base plates attached to front and rear cross-rails supported on the floor. Arm mounting members are attached to the left and right side arms of the chair, respectively. Friction reducing buttons on said arm mounting members movably contact said base plates. At least one of said buttons is adjustable to ensure retaining said chair against swaying sideways. A button at each side of the chair, is attached to one link of the arm rest suspension linkage, to slidably contact another link of the suspension linkage, to also aid in preventing side sway of the chair. The cross-rails extend beyond the base plates and beyond the inner surfaces of the side arms of the chair. The cross-rails can extend to the outer surfaces of the side arms, with supporting pads or glides mounted on the ends of the rails to increase stability of the chair, particularly against tilting sideways if excessive weight is imposed on one side of the chair. The rear cross-rail is vertical while the front cross-rail is horizontal, thereby giving rigidity to the parallel base plates. The base plates are supported on the cross-rails and the rest of the chair is supported on the base plates. Parts of the base plates are pushed out where the buttons contact the base plates in the upright position of the chair, for increased rigidity in said upright position. Coil springs are employed to help ensure keeping the leg rest retracted in upright position of the chair.

The seating furniture comprises a seat part and a back part disconnectably connected thereto in condition for use and to allow the furniture to be packed more compactly by the manufacturer for shipment to the retailer with the back part disconnected from the seat part and overlying the seat part. The furniture may be either a club chair or sofa or a rester or a lounger. The hardware comprises a mounting member connected to one of said furniture parts slidably received in a slot or channel or passage in a channel forming member connected to the other of said furniture parts, and having a resilient tongue adapted to snap into a hole in said mounting member, to limit relative sliding movement between said mounting member and channel forming member to hold said furniture parts in assembled condition for display or use. Said furniture parts can thus be assembled by the retailer when received in disconnected condition from the manufacturer. The back part can be disassembled from the seat part by prying the tongue out of the hole in the mounting member to allow the back part to again be pulled away from and disconnected the seat part.

This chair comprises a chair base having chair side arms on which a body supporting means is tiltably mounted. The chair is constructed to allow the body supporting means to tilt on said base from upright position to said T.V. and fully reclined positions, while the upper end of the backrest portion of said body supporting means, retains its spacing relative to a wall of the room in which the chair is located, while the chair side arms move bodily forwardly away from said wall. The chair arms are swingably mounted on floor engaging base plates, in such manner that the body supporting means can tilt from upright position to fully reclined position, while the chair side arms move forwardly substantially horizontally, being guided by the base plates without side to side movement, first from a rear position of the chair side arms to a forward position projecting forwardly of the base plates, as the body supporting means tilts from upright position to T.V. position, and then moves further forwardly, and projecting further forwardly of the base plates as the body supporting means tilts from T.V. position to fully reclined position. With such construction, sufficient weight of the occupant of the chair is located rearwardly enough to prevent tilting of the front end of the chair side arms downwardly, to maintain the chair side arms in balance, and against tilting or tipping down at its front end.

This chair comprises a chair body having arm rests and being fixed to tracks mounted for longitudinal movement on stationary tracks supported on a floor. Seat links, a leg rest and linkage mechanism connecting said seat links and leg rest to the body and to each other, permit the seat links, and leg rest to be moved from upright position to T.V. position, and then to fully reclined position, and back to T.V. position and upright position. Links are pivoted, connecting the stationary tracks and the movable tracks with said linkage mechanism, to move the body and its movable tracks, longitudinally forwardly relative to the stationary tracks as the seat links, backrest and leg rest move from upright to T.V. position, and to then move the body and its movable track, further forwardly longitudinally relative to the stationary track, as the seat links, backrest and leg rest move from T.V. position to fully reclined position.

This pull out sofa bed is an improvement of the sofa bed disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 3,984,883 dated Oct. 12, 1976 and assigned to the assignee of the present application. In said patent bed there is in effect a lost motion during which no work of compressing the mattress is being performed while slack is being taken up. Consequently the work required to compress the mattress and create the necessary locking of the compressed mattress, is concentrated over a relatively short part of the closing cycle of the folding of the bed. The result of this is that a relatively high "peak" force is required at this portion of the cycle to close the bed and compress the mattress and lock the bed in closed position, thereby requiring exertion of considerable strength by the person closing the bed. The patented bed is satisfactory when the mattresses were made of polyfoam. However, heavy inner-spring mattresses are now being used also and it takes greater strength to fold the beds when using such heavy inner-spring mattresses. The bed disclosed herein has means for spreading the work necessary to compress the mattress over a much larger portion of the closing cycle, thereby reducing the peak force required to close the bed. Another shortcoming of the bed of U.S. Pat. No. 3,984,883 was that the installation of the helical spring when used in a maximum tension position of multi-tension positions, was very difficult. Another shortcoming was that the high force required to stretch the helical coincided in the bed closing cycle with the peak of the mattress compression force and was additive in causing an excessively high closing requirement. In the present design, one end of the main helical spring is anchored to one of a plurality of holes equidistant from the pivot point of the main lever controlled by the spring thus permitting a far simpler installation.
