摘要: The present invention relates to a display film that may be transferred by lamination or otherwise onto a substrate. The display film is formed of a stack of layers that can include different types, arrangements, and functionality within the stack depending upon factors including the characteristics of the substrate (e.g., upper or lower, transparent or opaque, substrates) and addressing of the display (e.g., active or passive matrix, electrical or optical addressing). The layers of the stacked display film include one or more electrode layers and one or more liquid crystal layers and, in addition, may include various combinations of an adhesive layer, preparation layer, casting layer, light absorbing layer, insulation layers, and protective layers. The liquid crystal layer can include cholesteric or other liquid crystal material. The liquid crystal layer can be a dispersion of liquid crystal in a polymer matrix formed by a variety of techniques. The display film may interact with components mounted on or laminated to the substrate, including a solar cell, active matrix backplane and electrodes. The display film may be mounted onto flexible or drapable substrates such as fabric and can itself be drapable. Thus, the invention offers substantial flexibility in fabrication and design that has not been previously possible in the display industry.

摘要: A photodisplay device in which an optically addressed image can be viewed indefinitely, erased and readdressed with a new image is disclosed. Optically responsive reversible photochiral materials are incorporated into a bistable cholesteric liquid crystal in an electrooptic display cell. A high resolution image exposed on the cell is fixed by a low voltage pulse to unpatterned electrodes and can be, at a later time, erased with a high voltage pulse.

摘要: The present invention enables a user of a portable electronic communications device such as a cell phone to view information on a larger remote reflective cholesteric display. The portable communications device may connect with the remote display by wire or wirelessly. The remote display is separate from the portable communications device but can interact with it. The remote display receives and/or receives and sends information relative to the portable communications device. This information can include e-mail text and graphics. The remote display, being a bistable cholesteric liquid crystal display, possesses low power requirements unmatched by other display technologies. Moreover, the remote display can serve a dual purpose of displaying images and collecting solar power whereby a photovoltaic material behind the display generates electrical energy from light incident on the cholesteric liquid crystal material, which may be used not only to power the remote display but also the portable communications device. This may result in a completely self-powered remote display and associated portable communications device. The solar cell itself can be a component of the display. A display having only a single substrate may employ the solar cell as the substrate. A dispersion layer comprised of cholesteric liquid crystal material dispersed in a polymer matrix, may be disposed over the substrate. Another aspect of the invention features a drapable remote bistable cholesteric display.
