Abstract:
A tape measure housing, and a tape measure incorporating the housing, includes a main case and an elastomeric grip element mated to the main case. The main case has first and second sidewalls and a peripheral wall extending between the sidewalls which help jointly define an internal chamber therewithin for housing the coilable tape blade. An elastomeric grip element having a perimeter edge is disposed over at least a portion of the top portion, at least a portion of the rear end portion of the case, and at least a portion of the first and second sidewalls. The outer surface of the first and second sidewalls is external recess-free proximate the perimeter edge of the grip element.
Abstract:
A utility knife has a body comprising a blade-receiving cavity defined by first and second generally opposing walls; a retention element laterally moveable with respect to the cavity via a hole in one of the walls; an actuator moveable longitudinally relative to the cavity between a retention position and a release position; the actuator having a recess opening towards the cavity and a cam surface; wherein the hole and the recess are aligned when the actuator is in the release position and offset when the actuator is in the retention position; the actuator in the retention position causes the cam surface to engage the retention element to force the retention element to a protruding position in the cavity; the actuator in the release position allows the retention element to be withdrawn, allowing the blade to be removed. Also, a related method of assembly.
Abstract:
A manually powered cutting tool with cutting force at the cutting jaw faces that is multiplied several times by the mechanism, leading to a much higher maximum available cutting force than possible with conventional snips. The maximum magnitude of the cutting force applied to the workpiece may be much larger due to multiple stages of force multiplication present in the mechanism. The multiplication factors are established by the structural geometry built into the tool.
Abstract:
A magnetic end hook for a tape measure has a hook member having a mounting section extending in a first direction and a hooking section extending away from the mounting section in a second direction generally transverse to the first direction. A distinct bezel affixes to the hooking section so as to capture a magnet between the bezel and the hooking section. A magnet is disposed at least partially in a hole in the hooking section and a hole in the bezel so as to be visible from both front and rear views of the end hook. The magnet may include flanges and a fastener, such as a rivet, may secure the bezel in place. There may be a second magnet similarly situated. A tape measure and methods of assembly are also described.
Abstract:
A tape measure includes a post with at least first and second arms spaced from one another to form a longitudinal slot having an end aperture for coupling with a tape blade retraction spring. The post distal end anchors to a housing sidewall via a fastener, and a fastener engagement region of the post extends from the aperture to the fastener's terminus. A distinct reinforcing collar is disposed about the post's distal portion and acts to limit movement of the arms away from one another. The collar may overly the post for at least half of the fastener engagement region and/or may abut a shoulder on the post. The fastener may have a first pullout resistance level without the collar present and a second higher pullout resistance level, advantageously double or more, with the collar present. Also, methods of assembly are described.
Abstract:
A manually operated cutting tool comprises a frame having a handle portion adapted to engage a user's hand for manual movement of the frame relative to a material to be cut; a blade removably affixed to the frame and moveable along therewith during a cutting operation; the blade having a plurality of cutting surfaces and formed of a base material of a first material having a first toughness and a rigid wear-enhancing outer coating of a second material, different from the first material, external of the cutting surfaces of the base material; the second material having a second toughness more than the first toughness. The frame may be a hacksaw frame or a utility knife frame. The coating may comprises a vapor deposition applied material, such as a physical vapor deposition applied material.
Abstract:
A hand operated file is provided with a thin ceramic coating of a transition metal nitride, such as vanadium nitride and/or zirconium nitride, on its teeth. The coating may be 20 um or less, thereby not altering the macro dimensions of the file. The coating may be applied using a vapor deposition process such as physical vapor deposition, and advantageously via a physical vapor deposition process where the file body does not exceed a temperature of about 300° F. The coating helps prevent galling, thereby increasing the useful life of the file.
Abstract:
A tape measure comprises a main case having first and second sidewalls and a peripheral wall extending between the sidewalls; a flexible tape blade selectively deployable from the case; the tape blade having a generally curved cross-sectional profile when deployed from the main case and having a generally flat profile when retracted into the main case; a hook attached to a first end of the tape blade so as to be movable a distance along a longitudinal axis of the tape blade; the hook having a first section disposed generally parallel to the longitudinal axis and a second section connected thereto and disposed generally normal to the longitudinal axis, the hook comprising titanium and having a weight factor of not more than about 0.60. The tape blade may advantageously be not more than about 1.10 inch in width and have a standout of at least 9½ feet.
Abstract:
A saw and/or saw frame comprising: an elongate substantially rigid back member and a swing arm pivotally connected to the back member so as to be rotatable between an extended position and a storage position; A handle comprises a first blade mount; the swing arm comprises a second blade mount; the back comprises a third blade mount disposed proximate to the swing arm; each of the first, second, and third blade mounts being constructed to engage one end of a removably mounted saw blade; and wherein the first, second, and third blade mounts are disposed to allow quick changes in blade configuration. The back member also has an elongate blade storage cavity accessible from above adapted to store at least one of the removably mounted saw blades and an auxiliary blade mounting mechanism configured to operatively mount an auxiliary blade extending forward from the frame.
