In one aspect of the present invention, a toy arrangement involving a flickering, animated and/or luminescent toy object will be described. The toy arrangement includes a toy object having an ultraviolet sensitive layer. A light source is arranged to illuminate the ultraviolet sensitive layer with ultraviolet light. The ultraviolet sensitive layer is arranged to emit colored light in response to exposure to the ultraviolet light. In some implementations, the light source is arranged to vary the intensity of the ultraviolet light, which in turn can cause the colored light emitted from the toy object to fade, brighten and flicker. The toy arrangement may also include a speaker that emits sounds that are synchronized with changes in the colored light.

An apparatus and method for determining characterizing attributes of an actuator is provided. An actuator may be moved to a maximum capacitance position. At the maximum capacitance position, an initial measurement of the actuator capacitance is made. The actuator is moved a predetermined increment toward a first extreme position, and the actuator capacitance is again measured. If the capacitance changed by a threshold amount, the signal preceding the signal that caused the actuator to move is recorded as an approximate response curve end point, or the first extreme position. The actuator is again moved a predetermined increment toward a second extreme position. After each move, the capacitance is measured. If it is determined the capacitance did change by a threshold amount from the previously measured capacitance, the signal related to the previously measured capacitance is recorded as an approximate response curve end point, or the second extreme position.

A method of synthesizing multi-level raster shapes directly from outlines describing ideal shapes is disclosed. A raster shape suitable for approximating the ideal shape in a raster display device is synthesized by dividing a plane into a plurality of pixel areas according to a pixel grid, then by representing the shape as one or more arcs in the plane, where the arcs collectively, and in conjunction with an insideness criterium, divide the plane into an inside region and an outside region, and then by separating the pixels into inside pixels, outside pixels, and boundary pixels. The raster shape comprises coverage values assigned to each pixel in the plane, where inside pixels are assigned a coverage value of 1, outside pixels a coverage value of 0 and the boundary pixels a coverage value between 0 and 1 approximating the degree to which the boundary pixel is covered by the inside of the outline. Initially, boundary pixels are assigned a coverage value of 0 or 1 based on a pixel-coverage criterium, and then it is corrected by a correction value resulting in a coverage value between 0 and 1. The correction value for a pixel might be a numerical value indicating the fraction of the pixel covered by the correction region; the correction value may also depend on the geometry of the correction region represented by the valve and the region's location within the pixel. The correction region of a boundary pixel is the signed difference between the region represented by the initial coverage value assigned to the pixel and the actual region of the pixel covered by the inside of the outline.

A method and apparatus for minimizing the visual degradation of a typeface wherein the need for the manual input of skilled technicians is eliminated and the important visual components of each character and the relationship of the visual components of each character with the other characters of the typeface are preserved. The characters are analyzed to determine the visual components in the horizontal and vertical direction which comprise each character and the priority of adjustment. Using the visual components determined, starting with the highest priority component, the coordinates describing each character are adjusted according to rules which are dependent upon whether the strokes formed are oriented in the horizontal or vertical direction. The adjustment of the lower priority visual components is dependent on the previously aligned components. The important visual components in the diagonal direction are subsequently adjusted in accordance with similar sized visual components in the horizontal and vertical direction wherein the dimensions of the adjusted horizontal and vertical components are maintained.

A pocket system for wearing an audio player comprising a pocket on a garment, where the pocket is capable of securely storing the audio player during use; and an eyelet opening above the pocket, where the eyelet opening channels an ear phone wire from the audio player toward a neck portion of the garment. The garment includes a set of loops on a top surface of the garment, where the set of loops guide the ear phone wire from the audio player. Further, the garment may include a hole within a neck portion, where the hole threads the ear phone wire.

A pizza cutter includes at least one blade, a handle attached to the blade, and extenders for positioning the cutter in a pizza box to cut uniform slices of pizza. The blade may be a single blade or two blades forming a 90 degree “X”. The handle is attached across the top of the blade and may include slots to better grasp the handle. The extenders are attached to opposite ends of the cutter and may be fixed or rotating, and intersect opposite corners of the pizza box to align the blade to cut uniform slices.

A detection circuit is coupled to an output terminal of a driver circuit. The detection circuit includes a comparator to compare a signal at the output terminal to a reference signal corresponding to a signal that would be generated if a capacitive load having a relatively high capacitance value were connected to the output terminal. Output of the comparator is sampled at a predetermined time after the driver circuit provides the drive signal. An error signal is generated when the sampled output indicates that the capacitive load having the relatively high capacitance value is actually connected to the output terminal.
