In a first embodiment according to the invention, a cordless telephone handset of a cordless telephone system includes a user input unit, a signal processor and an output driver. The signal processor is coupled to the user input unit. The signal processor processes user input received via the user input unit. For example, in one embodiment the user input unit is a keypad, and the signal processor selectively processes the user input as telephone control information and as television control information. Alternatively, a user can inquire and be provided with a list of available passcodes or PINs already established by other devices in the piconet, and select a particular passcode or PIN associated with one or more other piconet devices. The disabled button(s) can be re-enabled either manually by the user, or automatically, e.g., after hanging up the telephone. A timer can be included to automatically re-enable any disabled manual controls (i.e., buttons) if the user failed to manually re-enable disabled buttons before terminating the previous telephone call.
