A method for processing a received signal at a mobile receiver of a wireless communications system is disclosed. The method comprises demodulating the received signal to obtain an analog base band signal and converting the analog base band signal into a digital base band signal. The signal strength of the digital base band signal is estimated and, using the estimation, the digital base band signal is scaled by a scaling factor. The digital base band signal is equalized into an equalized digital signal which is then rescaled by a resealing factor.

The present disclosure provides simple methods and systems for generating modified branch metrics for the Viterbi decoder so that the decoder can decode the uncorrelated incoming signals without the influence of either the signal power level or the noise variance. The proposed branch metrics noticeably improve the performance of the Viterbi algorithm in such cases. The present disclosure also provides methods and systems for reducing the length of the demodulated symbols for efficient computation. In an exemplary method, it is shown that the only requirement of the proposed modified branch metric, in addition to the traditional branch metric requirements, is the computation of the noise energy. In another exemplary system, an arrangement of circuit modules offers an implementation of one of the embodiments of the proposed method.

The present disclosure introduces simple methods and systems for personal encryption of messages and data, using a GSM handset. The proposed methods and systems furnish another layer of communication security instead of or in addition to that of the carrier. Users can generate and customize their own encrypted communication, independent of the carrier. In one embodiment the existing handset hardware can be used to implement the personal encryption, without the need for additional hardware. The present disclosure also provides methods and systems for generating different encryption keys and synchronization methods. In one exemplary system the encryption key is kept in the memory of the handset, while in another exemplary system the key is downloaded from an SMS (Short Message Service) station. In one exemplary method the encryption key sequence is as long as the block data and is synchronized with each block data, while in another exemplary method the transmitted information is segmented and flagged for synchronization with the encryption key.

A method of detecting a tone signal from complex input samples r(n) in a wireless communication system is disclosed. The method comprises calculating the phase difference of the samples r(n) as a signal x(n). Next, the signal x(n) is filtered with a notch filter to generate a notched output y(n). The power of both the signal x(n) and the notched output y(n) is estimated. The ratio of the powers of the notched output y(n) and signal x(n) is calculated. The tone signal is detected if the ratio is below a predetermined threshold for a predetermined duration of time.
