This non-light sensitive layer has (1) a hydrophilic colloid in an amount of at least 200 mg/m2 to and including 2,000 mg/m2, (2) matte particles, and (3) an acrylate latex polymer having latex particles having an average size of less than 1 μm and a glass transition temperature of at least 70° C. The dry weight ratio of the acrylate latex polymer to the hydrophilic colloid is at least 0.8:1 and the dry weight ratio of the acrylate latex polymer to the total matte particles is at least 15:1.

A method for forming a radiation-sensitive high chloride silver halide emulsion is described comprising growing cubical silver halide grains having a central portion accounting for up to 98 percent of total silver of the grains which central portion contains an iridium coordination complex dopant, and chemically sensitizing the surface of the emulsion grains at a pH of at least 5.75. Localized addition of the known in the art reciprocity-controlling iridium dopants to an internal portion of the emulsion grains and chemical finishing of such an emulsion at elevated pH conditions improves reciprocity and latent image stability of the formed high chloride emulsions.

A mixer for preparing silver halide grains for photographic use has upper and lower impellers housed in a draft tube. The bottom impeller has flat blades for micromixing silver and halide reactants introduced into the bottom of the draft tube. The upper impeller has pitched blades for macromixing the bulk fluid. The impellers are spaced apart at least the distance of their diameters so that the upper and lower impellers operate independently of one another so that micromixing is independent of macromixing. A flow disrupter structurally associated with the draft tube and positioned above the top impeller prevents vortexing of the fluid during mixing. Baffles may be provided in the draft tube to discourage vortexing.

A color photographic element has a reflective support and a blue light sensitive color record, a green light sensitive color record, and a red light sensitive color record can be used to provide color photographic prints. The element also has a non-light sensitive interlayer between the green light and red light sensitive color records. A process for the preparation of a radiation-sensitive silver halide emulsion comprised of high chloride cubical silver halide grains containing from 0.05 to 3 mole percent iodide, based on total silver, where the iodide is incorporated in the grains in a controlled, non-uniform distribution forming a core containing at least 50 percent of total silver, an iodide free surface shell having a thickness of greater than 50 Å, and a sub-surface shell that contains a maximum iodide concentration is disclosed, the process comprising: (a) providing in a stirred reaction vessel a dispersing medium and host high chloride silver halide cubical grains comprising a speed enhancing amount of iodide, and (b) precipitating silver halide onto the host grains by introducing at least a silver salt solution into the dispersing medium at a rate such that the normalized molar addition rate, Rn, is above 3.0×10−2 min−1, Rn satisfying the formula: Rn=[Qf×Cf]/M where Qf is the volumetric rate of addition, in L/min, of silver salt solution into the reaction vessel; Cf is the concentration, in moles/L, of the silver salt solution; and M is total moles of silver halide in the host grains in the reaction vessel at the precise moment of addition of the silver salt solution. In a further aspect, this invention is directed towards a photographic recording element comprising a support and at least one light sensitive silver halide emulsion layer comprising silver halide grains prepared as described above. The advantages of the invention are generally accomplished in accordance with the discovery that when the exterior portion of profiled silver iodochloride grains are grown under specific conditions of high molar addition rates, iodochloride emulsions of enhanced sensitivity and photographic curve shape are produced, as speed can be increased while keeping fog to a low level.
