A repair apparatus for a shroud in a nuclear reactor pressure vessel is described. The repair apparatus includes an upper stabilizer assembly, a lower stabilizer assembly, and a tie rod configured to extend between and to couple to the upper and lower stabilizer assemblies. The upper stabilizer includes a stabilizer block and an upper stabilizer wedge slidably coupled to the upper stabilizer block. The upper stabilizer block is configured to couple to a shroud lug. The upper stabilizer wedge includes an integral leaf spring portion formed by a slot in the wedge and is configured to engage the side wall of the reactor pressure vessel. The lower stabilizer assembly includes a stabilizer block and a lower stabilizer wedge slidably coupled to the lower stabilizer block. The lower stabilizer block is configured to engage the shroud. A horizontal stabilizing spring is attached to the wedge and is configured to engage the side wall of the reactor pressure vessel. The tie rod is threaded at each end. One end threadedly engages a tie rod opening in the bottom stabilizer block. The other end is received by the upper stabilizer block and is secured by a tie rod nut.

Hard stops are useable in an operating nuclear reactor to separate and bias restrainer brackets and inlet mixers. Hard stops include a lip clamp that clamps to a restrainer bracket and a wedge member that biases against the inlet mixer. The wedge member and lip clamp are engaged such that the two components can slide against one another to bias the restrainer bracket and inlet mixer. The lip clamp includes a clamp arm and an engagement member to clamp opposite sides of the restrainer bracket. Ratchet assemblies maintain selective positioning various components of the hard stops. Hard stops may be used in several different numbers, positions, and configurations in repair or modification systems. Hard stops may be installed by determining location on an outside of a restrainer bracket for the hard stop, securing the hard stop at the location, and biasing the hard stop between two components at the location.

A method and an apparatus for repairing a shroud in which the top guide support ring has been subjected to stress corrosion cracking. The method involves the placement of a plurality of clamps around the outer circumference of the shroud at a plurality of azimuthal positions between jet pump assemblies. The clamps structurally replace the welds that join the top guide support ring to the upper and lower shroud walls. The shroud repair clamps support the top guide, the fuel bundle assemblies and the shroud head. The shroud repair clamps are bolted to the shroud above and below the top guide support ring in a manner which will prevent relative movement across the top guide support ring welds during all normal and upset conditions.
