摘要: The probability of a time out and the resulting waste of channel capacity in a communication system is decreased by controlling the length of the time out period so as to minimize the number of time outs that occur. The length of the time out is based on the sum of the average channel delay and four times the deviation in the channel delay. A delay is introduced into the communication channel so as to increase the deviation in the channel delay. This results in an increase in the length of time required for a time out. As a result, the number of time outs is drastically decreased which in turn decreases the number of wasteful ramp up times that results in a more efficient use of channel capacity.

摘要: In one embodiment, a relationship is determined between radio link protocol (RLP) sequence numbers in received RLP packets and real-time protocol (RTP) sequence numbers in RTP packets decompressed from the received RLP packets. An RTP sequence number associated with a compressed RTP packet is determined based on the determined relationship and at least one of the RLP sequence numbers of the received RLP packet or packets forming the compressed RTP packet. An RTP time stamp may be determined in a similar manner.

More specifically, in one embodiment, there is provided a method comprising receiving a voice-over-IP packet including at least one packet header that contains a set of one or more packet header field values, selecting a content identifier that corresponds to the one or more packet header field values of the received packet, replacing at least one of the packet-header field values in the received packet with the selected content identifier, thereby to create a compressed voice-over-IP packet, and transmitting the compressed voice-over-IP packet across a network connection.

摘要: In one embodiment, the method includes determining, at a first network element, whether to turn on compression of a header for a packet transport protocol used for a communication flow between the first network element and a second network element. The determining is based on a type of the communication flow, and the packet transport protocol is a protocol for transport of packets between the first and second network elements. The method further includes sending a compression mode indictor to the second network element along with a context identifier. The compression mode indicator indicates the determination, and the context identifier for use in identifying the communication flow.
