A device for the control of a flat-bed knitting machine for the positional determination at lift reversal of the carriage assembly driven by a reversible motor has a phase-shifted pulse generator device on the carriage assembly which can be moved back and forth and a stationary pulse generator board device in the area of the needle bed arrangement. With such a device a reproducible lift reversal can be performed in the area of the ends of the needle bed as well as at any desired location along the needle bed arrangement, the pulse generator board device has a pulse generator board extending along a needle bed of the needle bed arrangement. During lift reversal the pulse sequences of a pulse generator associated with the pulse generator board are detected in a calculator unit and compared with the pulses associated with the locations for the beginning or alternatively, the end of the lift reversal which have been preset by a program, and the calculator unit performs a speed change during the detection of the lift reversal pulses in dependence an overrun set by the program and the present working speed.

A device for the control of a flat-bed knitting machine for needle selection and/or the determination of the position of the carriages on the needle beds is provided with a pulse generator device having magnetically controllable resistors in the form of double differential magnetoresistors and being fixed on a first machine element, and with a magnetically conductive pulse generator board device being fixed on a second machine element. The two machine elements are movable in relation to each other and the magnetoresistors generate separate and phase-shifted in respect to each other pulse sequences during the relative movement to the pulse generator board device. So that in a device a control, especially of the needle selection, can take place at considerably higher speed a determination of direction, and if needed, an adjustment to the speed of the carriage being possible at the same time, it has been provided that the pulse generator board device has a first pulse generator board arranged along a needle bed, the tooth/grove gauge of which is finer that the finest needle gauge in the needle bed, that a pulse generator, fixed on the carriage, is associated with the first pulse generator board, the magnetoresistors of which are distant by approximately .lambda..sub.1 /4 (.lambda..sub.1 being the size of the impulse period), and that at predetermined intervals several successive first rectangular control pulses (I-VIII) are derived from the first pulse sequences phase-shifted by .lambda..sub.1 /4 (A.sub.FP, B.sub.FP) by detecting the crossover and comparing the normalized pulse sequences.

An electromagnetically-controlled flat knitting machine has a supervising system for checking the functional readiness of a setting magnet of the machine. The supervising system comprises a microprocessor with a detecting and signalling device, and a detector for measuring closed and open circuits. Such measurements are collected periodically from the microprocessor through an intermediate unit and are signalled on the signalling device. The individual setting magnets can be checked for functional readiness both in the case of a stationary as well as a running machine without these having to be specially actuated (i.e. energized) for this purpose. To this end, a direct voltage of an intensity less than the response voltage of the winding thereof is applied to the setting magnet concerned. A measuring resistance is arranged in a conductor to the setting magnet energized by the auxiliary direct voltage, and the aforesaid intermediate unit is connected to an analogue to digital converter whose input is connected to the measuring resistance.

In a safety device, in particular for flat-bed knitting machines, with which, by means of a shutoff device, stoppage of the carriages associated with a drive apparatus of the machines in the event of a change in the power of the carriages as compared with applicable normal operation resulting from disruptions in removal of the goods, loop formation and yarn insertion, excessively high loop tightness specification or the like, is effected. A measuring device is provided for detecting a torque-proportional variable of the drive mechanism. Actual values of the torque-proportional variable are deliverable to a central processing unit and an adjustable comparator device, and the comparator device is provided by the central processing unit, with threshold values for this torque-proportional variable, serving as processed actual value for the torque-proportional variable. Finally, by means of the comparator device, the shutoff device is triggerable as soon as the applicable threshold value is exceeded. Thus in a safety device of this kind, the varying conditions in individual flat-bed knitting machines of the same of different types and in the various operating programs can be taken into account, because the safety device can be made adequately sensitive for each case.

A device for the selectively controllable mutual displacement of yarn guides of flat-bed knitting machines has a plurality of electromagnets fixed against motion on a carriage unit, to each one of which a mutual displacement device is controllably assigned, the mutual displacement finger of which can be brought into and out of contact with at least one associated yarn guide box of a yarn guide, movable parallel to a needle bed unit along yarn guide rails. In order to make the transfer of motion from the electromagnet to the mutual displacement finger more rapid and independent of the direction of motion of the carriage unit in such a device for the selectively controllable mutual displacement of yarn guides of flat-bed knitting machines, it has been provided that the electromagnet be surrounded by a frame element, from the center of one end of which the mutual displacement finger protrudes in the direction of movement and the other end of which can be acted upon by an armature rod of the associated electromagnet, and that the frame element is supported in a longitudinally movable manner on its two side legs.

A device for the determination of the position of leading or trailing draw-down elements which can be shifted to operated in opposite directions in flat-bed knitting machines has a single step motor for shifting the draw-down elements, a position sensor and a switching element movable in relation to each other and cooperating with each other, the switching element indicating a basic position of the two draw-down elements. So that in such a device besides the basis position of the two draw-down elements the shifted position, i.e. which of the two draw-down elements is in the draw-down position, can be machine-internally determined, a second switching element is provided, which is operationally connected with the position sensor, the second switching element and the position sensor being movable in relation to each other and the second switching element being synchronously movable with the first switching element. Furthermore, the second switching element is associated with one of the two draw-down elements for the determination of the switched position of the two draw-down elements.

A pair of stitch cams 12 and 13 are adjustably supported by the carriage 14 and are disposed so as to trail behind the needle cam in alternate strokes of the carriage, respectively.
