Abstract: Cushioning material is formed of plural plies of thermoplastic sheet material heat bonded together in a particular manner to provide the material useful under moderate and high pressures. A first ply has cellular protrusions extending from one side. The second side carries a second sheet heat bonded to land areas of a grid bordering the openings of the protrusions. The second sheet has a pattern of a heat resistant lacquer on the side fronting the first sheet to prevent overall heat bonding of the land areas with the second sheet. The pattern is such as to provide that some land area surrounding each protrusion opening will be heat bonded while the remaining land area defining the protrusion opening will be free of bond with the second sheet so that air flow may occur between protrusions within the sheet structure.

Abstract: A nonwoven roll towel material including a central layer of an open mesh crossed thread fabric comprising resilient warp threads extending in the machine direction,and substantially non-resilient fill threads extending in the transverse direction. The thread count is in the range of from about 1.5 to about 5 threads per inch in both directions. A multi-ply layer of cellulosic tissue is bonded to each of the opposite faces of the central layer, and the resulting composite material is heavily embossed. The preferred embossing technique comprises passing a web of the composite material through two or more embossing stations on the surface of a single embossing roll, and drawing the web away from the surface of the embossing roll between successive stations. This technique produces two more embossments repeated continuously along the length of the composite material and out of register with each other.

WHEN SHEETS OF THE THUS TREATED TISSUE WEB ARE DEPOSITED IN THE AQUEOUS SYSTEM OF A RECIRCULATING TOILET AND SUBJECTED TO CIRCULATORY ACTION OF THE AQUEOUS FLUID THEREIN, THE NARROW WEB PORTIONS QUICKLY WEAKEN AND RUPTURE. THE MAJOR AREAS OF THE SHEETS REPRESENTED BY THE WET-STRENGTHENED PATCHES ARE DISPERSED IN THE WATER AS SMALL INDIVIDUAL PATCHES WHICH RETAIN THEIR INTEGRITY AND APPROXIMATE SIZE. THE NARROW UNBOUNDED WEB PORTIONS BREAK UP INTO INDIVIDUAL COMPONENT FIBERS BUT THESE FIBERS REPRESENT ONLY A MINIMAL PART OF THE TOTAL FIBERS IN THE WEB.
