A sheet type detection device includes an image reading circuit, a surface property determination circuit, a thickness determination circuit, and a sheet type identifying circuit. The image reading circuit reads a document image to generate image data. The surface property determination circuit determines a sheet surface condition of a sheet type detection target based on the image data generated by the image reading circuit. The thickness determination circuit determines a sheet thickness of the sheet based on the image data generated by the image reading circuit. The sheet type identifying circuit identifies a sheet type based on the determination result of the surface property determination circuit and the determination result of the thickness determination circuit.

In an image processing apparatus, an area separating unit classifies a property of a pixel in an image into any of plural properties that include at least a character property and an image property, a black generation and UCR processing unit performs a black generation process and a UCR process for the image, and a process amount specifying unit specifies a black generation amount and a UCR amount used in the black generation process and the UCR process to the black generation and UCR processing unit. Further, the process amount specifying unit sets the black generation amount and the UCR amount on the basis of a smallest color component value of a pixel with the image property using a conversion characteristic that varies in accordance with a lightness value, a chroma saturation value and a hue value of the pixel with the image property.

A paper type detection apparatus includes a surface-property detection unit, a thickness detection unit, and a paper-type setting unit. The surface-property detection unit detects a surface property of paper by performing image processing on image data of the paper read by an image reading unit. The thickness detection unit causes the image reading unit to read the image data of the paper over which a reference chart with a predetermined black density is laid. The thickness detection unit detects the thickness of the paper based on the difference between the black density of the reference chart and the black density appearing on the image data through the paper. The paper-type setting unit sets the type of the paper associated with the detected surface property and thickness of the paper.

A number-of-documents calculator calculates a number of original documents on a document placement tray from their weight detected by a weight sensor. A controller sets a resolution to a predetermined first resolution when the number of original documents is less than a predetermined number or sets the resolution to a predetermined second resolution lower than the first resolution when the number of original documents is not less than the predetermined number, and allows a document reader to read images of the original documents at the set first or second resolution. A special document detector determines, based on image data on the original document, whether the original document satisfies a predetermined condition, and detects the original document satisfying the condition as a special original document preferably to be read at a third resolution higher than the first resolution. A notifier notifies a user that the special original document has been detected.
