A construction is provided in which a drain hole 4 provided with internal threads 3 in a Mg alloy oil pan 1 is closed with a screw-type plug body 5 constituted by a metal other than Mg and Mg alloy. The plug body 5 has a threaded shank 6 screwed into the drain hole 4 and an enlarged end 7 having a diameter larger than that of the threaded shank 6. A corrosion preventing plate 14 fitted on the threaded shank 6 via a threaded shank passing hole 15 is disposed between a washer 11 of the enlarged end 7 and a peripheral portion 13 of an opening of the drain hole 4 which corresponds to the washer 11 so that there is provided an electrical insulation between the washer 11 and the peripheral portion 13 of the opening. The corrosion preventing plate 14 has a plurality of annular sealing projections on both sides thereof which are arranged in a concentric fashion about the threaded shank passing hole 15 so as to bite into the peripheral portion 13 of the opening and the washer 11.

A metallic mold-casting method excellent in the resistance to penetration is herein disclosed and the method comprises the steps of forming a coating layer by applying a mixture comprising at least one member selected from the group consisting of high melting metals, ceramic materials and graphite, and an aqueous surfactant solution or low boiling liquid oils and fats to at least part of the surface of a metallic mold on its cavity side, then applying heat to the coated portion to thus adhere the mixture to the inner surface of the mold, and thereafter repeatedly casting a magnesium alloy in the metallic mold provided with the coating layer. The metallic mold-casting method permits the metallic mold casting of magnesium alloys with good resistance to penetration and this accordingly leads to the production of a cheap and high quality cast magnesium alloy product.

A refractory magnesium alloy includes magnesium as a principal ingredient, and an element having a radius 9–14% larger than a magnesium atom and a maximum concentration of 2 mass % or larger in a solid solution with magnesium is mixed in an amount not exceeding a maximum amount that can be homogeneously mixed in the solid solution with magnesium, whereby internal strength of grains thereof is enhanced. Alternatively, gadolinium with a content thereof ranging from 0.5 to 3.8 mass % is added, so that remaining part other than the gadolinium is composed of the magnesium and unavoidable impurities. This magnesium alloy serves to inhibit decrease in proof stress and creep deformation, especially primary creep deformation when used at high temperatures, typically at 200° C. The magnesium alloy may be employed for a structural material for a vehicle, so that a lightweight and heat-resistant structural material can be obtained.

In a thixocasting process, the following steps are used: a step of subjecting, to a heating treatment, an Al-Si based alloy material having a hypo eutectic crystal composition and a characteristic that a first angled endothermic section appearing due to the melting of a eutectic crystal and a second angled endothermic section appearing due to the melting of a component having a melting point higher than a eutectic point exist in a differential calorimetric curve, thereby preparing a semi-molten Al-Si based alloy material having solid and liquid phases coexisting therein; a step of pouring the semi-molten Al-Si based alloy material into a cavity in a casting mold under pressure; and a step of solidifying the semi-molten Al-Si based alloy material under pressure. When the temperature of a rise-start point in the first angled endothermic section is represented by T.sub.1, and the temperature of a drop-end point the first angled endothermic sections is represented by T.sub.2, the casting temperature T for the semi-molten Al-Si based alloy material is set in a range of T.sub.1 .ltoreq.T.ltoreq.T.sub.2. Thus, the fine precipitation of a primary crystal Si phase can be realized to provide an increase in strength of an aluminum alloy cast product.
