    摘要: A liquid crystal device includes a pair of substrates each having a uniaxial orientation as provided by rubbing or oblique vapor deposition, and a ferroelectric liquid crystal disposed between the substrates. The uniaxial orientation axes respectively provided to the pair of substrates intersect each other at an intersection angle .theta.. The ferroelectric liquid crystal molecules may have such an alignment tendency that their axes are twisted along a normal to the substrates in the absence of an electric field when they are disposed between two substrates having the same direction of uniaxial orientation axes. The liquid crystal device may be subjected to an AC application pretreatment. The uniaxial orientation axes respectively provided to the base plates may have mutually different orientation controlling powers.

    摘要: A liquid crystal compound represented by the formula (I) below or a liquid crystal composition containing the compound is interposed between a pair of base plates. ##STR1## wherein R is an alkyl or alkoxy group having 1-18 carbon atoms; m is 0 or 1; R.sup.1 is an alkyl group having 1 to 18 carbon atoms when m is 0 and is an alkyl or alkoxy group having 1-18 carbon atoms when m is 1. The liquid crystal compound or composition is in a chiral smectic phase formed through a phase transition from a higher temperature phase. At least one of the base plates has a face to which an orientation controlling function is imparted for preferentially orienting the liquid crystal molecules in contact with the face in one direction.

    摘要: A liquid crystal device comprising a first base plate which has projections thereon and has been subjected to a uniaxial orientation treatment, a second base plate disposed oppositely spaced from the first base plate with the projections therebetween as spacers, and a liquid crystal disposed between the first and second base plates. The projections have a section taken in parallel with the base plates, and the section has a side with a length of 0-20 .mu.m in a direction perpendicular to the uniaxial orientation treatment.     摘要: A ferroelectric liquid crystal device is constituted by a pair of oppositely spaced substrates each having an electrode thereon, and a layer of ferroelectric liquid crystal disposed between the substrates.     摘要: A ferroelectric liquid crystal device is by disposing between a pair of substrates a ferroelectric liquid crystal composition showing a phase transition series of isotropic.fwdarw.chiral nematic phase (N.sup.*).fwdarw.chiral smectic C phase on temperature decrease. The alignment state of the liquid crystal is improved by forming alignment control films of mutually different materials on the pair of substrates. The alignment state is improved especially when the liquid crystal composition is formulated to show a helical pitch in N.sup.* phase which exceeds three times the spacing between the pair of substrates.
