摘要:
A method and apparatus for varying track recording speed to maximize host-to-tape data transfer rates is presented. Variable data transfer rates of host systems and networks are accommodated by continually adjusting the tape speed to match the tape drive to the host's actual transfer rate. The speed of the tape is adjusted according to both the level of data present in the tape drive data buffer and whether the current mode of the drive is write mode or read mode. In the preferred embodiment, when the tape speed is accelerated or decelerated while writing a number of data track pairs to tape, a predetermined number of dummy track pairs are first written to tape at the current speed. On the next write head phase after the speed is increased or decreased as appropriate while the read heads are over the track, a predetermined number of dummy track pairs followed by more data track pairs are written to the tape at the new speed.

A multi-zone calibration system is disclosed. The multi-zone calibration system calibrates the operating parameters of an optical disk drive over a plurality of zones over an optical media. The optical media, in addition, can have writeable and premastered portions. The operating parameters can be calibrated for each of the media types in each of the zones. Additionally, the operating parameters can be calibrated for each type of operation (e.g., read or write) in each zone.
摘要:
A method of storing calibrated optical parameters is presented. In some embodiments, calibrated optical parameters are stored in place of stored parameters. In some embodiments, averages between the calibrated operating parameters and stored optical parameters are stored. In other embodiments, the stored optical parameters are allowed to vary only by a maximum amount. In some embodiments, if the calibrated parameters vary by more than threshold values, then the calibrated parameters are not stored.

A system and method for controlling operation of a motor system that addresses the design challenges for the small form factor optical disk system. The present invention includes starting the operation of a motor including windings and a rotor; placing the motor in a first operational state; driving the motor from the first operational state to a second operational state; and sensing a variation in an electrical waveform induced by driving of the motor to determine a cycle period from which the speed of the motor can be determined.

A system and method for controlling operation of a motor system that addresses the design challenges for the small form factor optical disk system. The control system can be operable to obtain digital feedback from a spin motor. The present invention includes detecting data representing a position on an optical medium and determining a detection rate; comparing the detection rate to a reference rate to provide an error rate; generating an output command in response to the error rate to provide a drive output which commands a voltage applied to a spin motor to adjust the spin speed of said spin motor.

A capstan controlled tape transport mechanism that includes a tape tension controller for preventing tape slack in the tape path is presented. The transport mechanism includes a capstan, a spinnable reel, and a reel motor which controls the speed of revolution of the reel in response to a reel motor voltage/current. The spinning of the reel results in the winding of the tape around the reel to generate a tape stack whose radius varies according to the amount of tape wound around the reel hub. Each revolution of the reel generates a fixed number of reel tach pulses per reel revolution. The spinnable capstan controls the transport of tape across the capstan in the direction of the reel, generating a fixed number of capstan tach pulses per capstan revolution. The tape tension controller calculates a target count representing the expected number of capstan tach pulses per reel tach pulse based on the current tape stack radius, and monitors the received number of capstan tachs per received reel tach at the current tape stack radius. If the received number of capstan tachs exceeds the target count, the tape tension controller increases the reel motor voltage/current to cause the reel to spin faster to take up any existing slack in the tape path. Once the tape tension controller starts to receive reel tach within the target number of capstan tachs for the given tape stack radius, any existing adjustment voltage is ramped back down to the nominal reel motor voltage/current.

A disc drive includes a tracking actuator, and determines when the tracking actuator is positioned off a formatted portion of optical media in the disc drive. The optical media includes a pitted premastered area that cannot be overwritten and a grooved user-writeable area that can be overwritten. Tracking control effort is monitored to determine when the tracking actuator is in the off-format condition and whether tracking good or tracking bad is detected within a predetermined time period. An absolute value of the tracking control effort is generated and the absolute value of the tracking control effort is filtered. An off-format condition is indicated if the filtered value of the tracking control effort is not within a predetermined threshold value.

A system for controlling focus in an optical disc drive for optical media with a premastered area that cannot be overwritten and a user-writeable area that can be overwritten includes instructions for turning focus on and off; and for acquiring focus on the optical media in response to a command to acquire focus. The actuator arm is moved according to a sinusoidal ramp function to prevent exciting resonances in the actuator arm. The amount of push-away force used while moving the actuator arm can be adjusted to avoid overshoot. The integrity of a focus error signal is determined and an attempt to re-acquire focus is made if the focus error signal indicates a bad focus status. The system turns focus off when at least one of the following conditions are met: (1) current state is a ramp focus acquire state and the maximum ramp position was reached; (2) current state is a focus push retry state and best push away value is greater than or equal to a predetermined fraction of a nominal push away value; or (3) a focus problem develops while in a focus active state.

A control system for an optical disc for optical media with a premastered area that cannot be overwritten and a user-writeable area that can be overwritten, comprises a first processor operable to communicate with a second processor via a status register. The first processor sequences and monitors functions performed in the second processor and the second processor issues an interrupt when an error condition is detected in the second processor. The first processor detects the interrupt, and disables detecting further interrupts until the interrupt is serviced. Servicing the interrupt includes recording the error state and changing focus and tracking parameters based on the error condition detected.
