摘要:
An apparatus for fusion splicing optical fibers has one rotatable clamp mechanism that is manually operated and a second rotatable clamp mechanism that is operated by a motor. A three position stopper functions in the first position as a stopper against the optical fibers when the optical fibers are moved toward each other and in the second position as a mirror for reflecting an image of respective end faces of the optical fibers. A rapid fine adjustment of the alignment of the polarization maintaining optical fibers can be made.

The present invention discloses a manufacturing method for polarization maintaining optical fiber couplers which are used for joining light signals and at optical fiber branch points. The disclosed manufacturing method employs polarization maintaining optical fibers, and describes a method for mutually aligning the stress applying parts of such optical fibers so that polarized optical signals are maintained in the polarized state when transiting such couplers.

.theta.-clamp also serves as a jacket clamp. The clamp comprises a cover mounted on an arm by a hinge and kept closed by a magnet, so that a pusher provided in the cover is urged against a jacketed portion of an optical fiber by a spring. In this state, the fiber is rotated in a .theta. direction by rotating a dial. .theta.-clamp also serves as a jacket clamp. Therefore, 1. The .theta.-clamp can be positioned close to a fiber clamp. For this reason, the optical fiber is not twisted during .theta.-axes alignment, and a follow-up property of rotation of the optical fiber with respect to rotation of the .theta. axis is improved. In addition, the apparatus need not be adjusted so as not to twist the optical fiber. 2. The distance between fiber clamp and .theta.-clamp is shortened. Therefore, when the optical fiber is clamped and moved in the z direction, the jacketed portion is not flexed. For this reason, a follow-up property of movement of the end face of the optical fiber with respect to movement of a table in the z-axis direction is improved.

The present invention discloses an optical fiber fusion splicer which, together with fusing and splicing optical fibers in the state in which the jacket of each optical fiber core is clamped by being provided with a means by which a V-shaped groove base is moved up and down so that the axial centers of optical fiber cores are positioned at the proper position for electrical discharge, is provided with a mechanism that temporarily moves clamp upward and V-shaped groove base downward followed by re-clamping in order to eliminate a lift-up phenomenon during rotation alignment of the constant polarization optical fibers.

An apparatus for aligning a plurality of single-fiber cables, comprises a base, a cover hinged to the base and forming a gap along with the base when closed, and a pair of arms inserted in the gap and movable within the gap, for aligning the single-fiber cables in the same plane. To align single-fiber cables by means of the apparatus, the cables are arranged on the base, one after another. Then, the cover is closed, whereby the cables are located in the gap between the base and the cover. The arms or the pawl members, which are inserted in the gap, are moved, thereby putting the cables together and placing them parallel to one another in the same plane, any cable not forced above so that it rides atop another. The cables, thus aligned, can easily be held by a holder designed for multi-fiber cables.

An apparatus for adjusting the alignment of the optical fibers at a high precision, formed by a base frame having a plurality of pairs of V-grooves for mounting the optical fibers at mutually facing sides of the base frame, each V-groove being defined by a fixed member and a movable member, each movable member being movable within a guide groove defined between each adjacent fixed members, and one of each pair of V-grooves on one of the mutually facing sides has the fixed member and the movable member facing against the movable member and the fixed member, respectively, of another one of each pair of V-grooves on another one of the mutually facing sides; and a plurality of piezoelectric elements, each of which is connected with each movable member of each V-groove, for causing each movable member to move within the guide groove such that a displacement of each movable member makes an adjustment of a position of an optical fiber mounted on each V-groove.
